Ohio State will add new prestige to its faculty with the appointment of Johnson & Johnson executive Christine Poon, who will serve as dean of the Max M. Fisher College of Business in April, pending approval by the Board of Trustees.
"Christine Poon brings a remarkable record of leadership and innovation and has a deep understanding of the value that research brings to our economy," said President E. Gordon Gee in a press release.
"We are fortunate to have her expertise at Ohio State. Her extensive professional experience will enrich and enliven our faculty and their work with students, as well as bring new opportunities to foster external partnerships."
Poon will take the place of interim dean Steve Mangum, who has served as the dean of the College of Business since Joseph A. Alutto became the executive vice president and provost in 2007, according to a press release.
Both Alutto and Gee recommended Poon as the new dean.
"She has a firm grasp on the importance of scholarship and the way that scholarship has to be focused on practical issues," Alutto said.
Poon's 30-year career in pharmaceuticals has consistently made her one of Forbes 100 most powerful women in business, and has resulted in her current position as vice chairman and board member of Johnson & Johnson, and worldwide chair of the pharmaceuticals group.
"Early in my career, I experienced the thrill of translating basic research ideas into products and services that could make a real difference to global health and wellness," Poon said. "I am eager to work with the world-class faculty and exceptional students at Fisher, who are perfectly positioned to identify the ideas and execute the business strategies that will contribute to Ohio and the nation's economic recovery."
Poon's appointment will influence more than just the College of Business.
"Given her background and previous experiences, she'll have an impact on health sciences," Alutto said. "Poon could help establish new interdisciplinary programs with health sciences, drugs and business," he added.
Poon will begin her work as dean in April, pending approval by the Board of Trustees.
"I'm very confident," Alutto said. "I think it's a very special appointment."
