In today's economy it can be especially trying to find a new job after graduation. Lindsey Pollak wants to change that.
Pollak, author of "Getting from College to Career: 90 Things to Do Before You Join the Real World," came to Ohio State to give tips on how students can recession-proof their job search. She spoke to a group of about 50 students Monday at Pfahl Hall.
During her workshop, she presented tips for students who will be graduating in the downed economy.
Lindsey PollakPollak warned students that Facebook profiles often raise red flags for potential employers. Pictures with alcohol or risqué clothing are all typical photos that post-graduates often forget to delete. She stressed that students need to clean their profiles the second they start looking for jobs.
Employers also find it easy to weed out candidates based on subtle formalities, Pollak said. She made reference to inappropriate voicemail greetings and e-mail addresses, such as her sister's e-mail address: Pooky3.
Following Pollak, a panel of four former OSU students spoke about their job searches. They shared their insight on what employers look for in today's economy.
Students in attendance seemed to latch on to Pollak's advice.
"It's very beneficial, I've been looking for a job for four months," said Lucy Febus, a senior in international business.
"I wrote down five steps to use that I wasn't doing before."
