Rewards up to $500 are being offered by the University Area Crime Stoppers for information leading to arrests or indictments of anyone involved in two armed robberies that took place in the Ohio State area on Nov. 4.
"We want to make it known that these (crimes) are not something the community will tolerate," said Steve Sterrett, board member of University Area Crime Stoppers.
According to a Nov. 11 article in The Lantern, the first robbery happened at about 2:30 p.m. Nov. 4 when Maddie Brennan, an Ohio University student and Dana Alguire, an OSU student, were robbed at gunpoint on Chittenden Avenue.
The students said they were walking down Chittenden when they noticed a man behind them.
"I heard him cock his gun and said, 'Give me your purses,'" Brennan said. "We immediately did as we were told. It was the most scared that I have ever been in my life."
The University Area Crime Stoppers press release said the suspect was described as a "stocky black male in his early 20s wearing a black hoodie and jeans."
Later that evening, at about 6:45 p.m., a female student walked into a residence room in Halloran House and saw a man trying to burglarize the room. The suspect, described in the press release as a 6-foot tall black male wearing a gray hoodie and jeans, fled when he saw the student. Another student followed the suspect to the loading dock, but the suspect brandished a gun before getting into a dark-colored SUV.
The press release said the police have no evidence relating the two crimes.
"We are hopeful that if we can get the word out about the awards, there may be someone with information who can help the cops solve the crimes," Sterrett said.
According to the press release, all calls and tips will remain anonymous.
Anyone with information regarding these crimes should contact The University Area Crime Stoppers at (614) 247-8477.
