A gathering of students, faculty, and community visitors united to celebrate the grand reopening of the Frank W. Hale Black Cultural Center on Wednesday.
“It`s a wonderful atmosphere and a wonderful accomplishment for African-Americans and other minorities on this campus,” said Keisha Hunley, a junior biology and Spanish major.
The day-long extravaganza started with open house tours for the Ohio State community and general public given by student assistants, while vendors were on site selling literature and jewelry.
The Rev. Leon Sullivan provided the keynote address and afterwards members of the OSU community marched to the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Hale Center.
The additions will enhance the student experience at OSU, said Hale Center Program manager Larry Williamson Jr.
“The Hale Center provides a rich environment where students can learn and make lifelong friendships through academic support, gallery tours and celebrations,” Williamson said in a released statement.
Enhancements to the Hale Center include a computer lab, classrooms, conference and meeting room, tutoring center, reading room and a gift shop which will open in the future.
Members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. donated a 50-inch screen television which they won in a contest to the Hale Center with hopes that the television will enhance the quality of learning.
According to Shante Timberlake, member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, the donation was made based on the premise of education. “We give it in good faith that it will be used in the best way possible,” Timberlake said.
Entertainment was provided each hour with performances by African-American Voices, OSU Jazz Ensemble, and Tony West and the Imani Dancers. Guests also were treated to a barbecue lunch.
Charmaine Campbell, a junior psychology and African American and African Studies major, said she felt that the Hale Center opening was very uplifting. “It gives the campus a chance to see the new and improved cultural center,” she said.
