Is Brian Shaffer alive?

Missing med student might be alive, attorney says; brother suspects best friend has knowledge of incident that happened three years ago

An attorney believes that an Ohio State medical student who has been missing for more than three years is alive, he told a private investigator in an e-mail.

Brian Shaffer has been missing since April 1, 2006. He was last seen on surveillance video outside the Ugly Tuna Saloona on the South Campus Gateway at 1:55 that morning. One of the last people to see Shaffer that night was William "Clint" Florence, one of Shaffer's best friends.

Attorney Neil Rosenberg represents Florence, who has refused at least two requests to take polygraph tests during the investigation of Shaffer's disappearance. Florence is the only person who has refused to take a polygraph, said Kevin Miles, director of the Central Ohio Crime Stoppers.

Private investigator Don Corbett, who has worked on the case for free for the Shaffer family, said Florence refused his request to take a polygraph as recently as last September. Corbett said Florence also refused a police request to take a polygraph soon after Shaffer went missing. The Columbus Division of Police did not respond to phone calls last week seeking comment about Florence's refusal to take a polygraph.

In the e-mail he sent to Corbett on Sept. 22, 2008, Rosenberg said: "If Brian is alive, which is what I'm led to believe after speaking with the detective involved, then it is Brian, and not Clint who is causing his family pain and hardship. Brian should come forward and end this."

Rosenberg said last week in a phone interview that as far as he is concerned the case is closed, and he declined to comment about the investigation or the e-mail he sent to Corbett.

In an e-mail last week, Florence said: "While I appreciate any effort in trying to determine what happened to Brain [sic] that night, I must decline your request. ANY and ALL questions you have for me should be directed to my attorney, Neil Rosenberg."

Florence, 32, works for the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the Vanderbilt University Medical School, where he is a postdoctoral fellow, according to a Vanderbilt Web site.

Corbett said he doesn't know which detective Rosenberg was referring to in the e-mail. However, he believes it is one of three men at Columbus Police: detective Andre Edwards of the Physical Child Abuse Section, Sgt. John Hurst of the Physical Abuse Section and Deputy Chief Antone Lanata of the Investigative Subdivision.

All three did not respond to repeated requests last week for an interview about whether they told Rosenberg they believe Shaffer is still alive.

Rosenberg also said in his e-mail to Corbett that, "The only burning issue with the authorities remains Clint's refusal to be polygraphed. That decision was based on my recommendation and advise [sic] to Clint, not because he is, has been misleading or has something to hide, but that he simply has nothing new to tell and was totally up front and honest with them from the beginning. As far as Clint is concerned, this matter is closed."

In a telephone interview Friday, Meredith Reed, a friend of both Shaffer and Florence who was with them that night, said she took and passed a polygraph about a month after Shaffer disappeared.

She said she assumes the Columbus Police asked her to take the test.

In fact, everyone who was asked to take a polygraph passed it, Miles said.

But not everyone who knew Brian or who had seen him the night he went missing was asked to take a polygraph.

The last time Shaffer was seen on surveillance video outside the Ugly Tuna Saloona he was with two women, Brightan Zatko and Amber Ruic. Ruic said in a phone interview Friday that she was never asked to take a polygraph.

Brian's brother, Derek, is the last surviving member of the immediate family. His father, Randy, died on Sept. 14, 2008, when a tree limb fell on him outside his house during a windstorm. Derek's mother died of cancer three weeks before Brian went missing.

In a phone interview last week, Derek Shaffer said he was not asked to take a polygraph but that his father took and passed one. Derek Shaffer also said he thinks it's odd that Clint has refused to take any polygraphs.

"As soon as the detective started getting involved, that's when he pretty much had no contact with anybody," Derek Shaffer said. "I've always thought he definitely knows something - just won't come forward with it.

"If Brian did take off somewhere, if that is the case, we just always had a strong feeling that Clint would possibly know that."

Shaffer's girlfriend at the time, Alexis Waggoner, also thinks Florence knows something he doesn't want to tell. But her opinion regarding Shaffer's whereabouts now is different than Derek's.

"I don't think he's alive," Waggoner said. "I can't imagine he would have just done that."

Alexis Waggoner's father, Tom Waggoner, participated in the search for Shaffer in 2006. During that period he became acquainted with Florence.

"The gist of my perspective on Clint Florence is that I think that basically all roads to making any progress on the case on Brian Shaffer lead through Clint Florence," Tom Waggoner said.

There is still a $25,500 reward for information leading to Shaffer's whereabouts, Miles and Corbett said last week.

As a staff member at The Ohio State University and as a parent, a tragic turn for one of our own students makes a deep mark on all of us. I am glad the PI has volunteered his services and I am aghast that Mr. Florence has refused to take a lie detector test. At the very least it would help Brian's family in some small way. Mr. Florence is being selfish and his attorney is very wrong in implying that his client's decision is harmless. It all adds up to one possible conclusion: that Mr. Florence has something to hide. Shame on him.

To "benlev@aol.com" - I would very much like to know what Dearly Departed Miss Popovich has to do with Brian Shaffer. In addition to that I would love to know what point you may be trying to make.
Do you have a theory regarding the whereabouts of Brian Shaffer?

Julie Popovich was in Miami, FL for at least four days after she disappeared from Ohio. Her cell phone said so. And why did a girl from Ohio, going to school in Ohio have a Florida cell phone? It was given to her by her Miami boyfriend. Any questions?

A post below says Clint should be detained...For what? Can you tell us what happened to Brian Shaffer that Clint needs to come forward about? Huh? Well? You keep posting over and over about Clint and I don't get it....Sounds like somebody would love to see Clint rot in a cell for whatever reason.. If the police wanted to get Clint they would've by now.
Clint called Brian, right? Then their cell signals would match each others location, right? Brians phone went into voicemail right? Think about it you ignorant people posting stupid comments. You think in the middle of some quick thinking plot to get rid of his best friend, Clint attempts to call his victim? Oh, shut up people, and start using your Brain... If you were born with one .

To the below post, You are one sick and twisted human being.
None of that is true about Adam Saleh and you know it. Why such hatred toward Adam and Clint?
Seems like you might be part of the cover-up in the Popovich and Shaffer case.
If there is nothing to hide in those cases, then why is CPD unwilling to turn ALL the evidence over?
Dont want another Derris Lewis story out in the public?
Brian Shaffers case will be solved when Adam Saleh is freed. I'd love to get my hands on Brian Shaffers cell phone records starting Aug 2005 up to his disappearance. I bet the the answer lie there. The media tried saying these cases were connected, BUT CPD said no because Adam Saleh was behind bars. Well when you have the wrong guy behind bars and more people go missing on campus, we have a problem here. It's not everyday that people around campus go missing, BUT FOUR or FIVE in 8 MONTHS!
It's unfortunate we have such incompetent detectives keeping this town "safe".

Adam is a dangerous, deranged person that should be locked up for life. His violent behavior towards women had been escalating from grabbing women and simulating sex acts, to roughing up prostitutes, to finally killing Julie. He 100% would have killed again had CPD not detained him on the rape charge. He even tried to have CPD detectives killed from inside prison. He's full of himself, fortunately so full of himself he's stupid. The judge's description as a shark is accurate.

Adam came from a broken family. His mother was routinely brutally abused by his father with Adam as a witness. We're talking rape-by-broom handles, severe beatings, etc. and the police called numerous times BY ADAM. He is a monster that was created by a horrible aligning of nature and nurture.

Insinuating that Brian had anything to do with Julie's murder is ridiculous and insensitive. Many people, including those close to Brian, think he is still alive somewhere. How does someone just disappear without a trace on the biggest campus in America? Perhaps he WANTED to disappear. He was a very bright person. Maybe Clint helped him disappear?

Both stories are truly awful. I feel for the loved ones of both.

They should make Clint Florence go to to jail until he agrees to a polygraph, this is ridiculous. He is witholding evidence obviously...why else refuse a polygraph? He should have been held as a suspect.

I wonder why the guy below does not want people to believe Adam Saleh was framed for Julie Popovichs murder? Why soooo hostile? Bet its Julies real killer posting all that crazy stuff about Adam and Clint. I mean if I had gotten away with Julie and Brians deaths I'd be pointing the finger at Adam and Clint too! Nobody believes Adam or Clint have anything to do with all those campus victims. Do your research, or are you still afraid to call people on the phone? I bet he sent that crazy letter to Adam Saleh in prison claiming to be "Julies Mom". Julies mom didnt send it, and it was sent from the area that Julie and Mohamed were found..Only makes those suspects reported in the hoover area just seem more the likely killers. The sender of the letter shouldve driven to Julies moms town to send it. I guess if you're a serial killer you don't always make rational decisions...DNA rom the envelope should reveal who licked it and sent it. Adam was smart to keep..Hes a smart guy that doesnt kill people..

what a stupid comment....now you're somehow blaming brian for julie popovich's murder? i don't know who you think you are, but it's pretty damn obvious the police got the right person in the popovich case. as for implying that brian, who himself is likely a victim just like julie, had anything to do w/ it, well- you are a sad f*cked up individual and you really need to crawl in a hole and never come out. anybody who thinks that clint has behaved appropriately or has no information whatsoever needs their head examined.

The only people that need to come clean are the columbus police department and crimestoppers. Isnt it about time retired det. Mike Mccann and det. Wayne Buck take a polygraph? Crimestoppers takes calls from the public right? What do they do with those call? Turn them over to the police right? Was Brian a caller to crimestoppers in the case of Julie Popovich? Brian Shaffer fits the description of a friend seen taking to Julie that the plice wanted to talk to..THE shell neclkace guy wearing a blue polo...Look how many pics there are of Brian wearing a shell necklace and blue polo! Police never did say who the shell necklace guy is do they. Then Brian Shaffer goes missing and Adam Saleh is charged with Julies murder. They say then that Adam is the shell necklace guy. Excuse me but Adam Saleh was wearing a BEERCAP necklace and is 6inches shorter than Julie. Adam is NOT the tall dark haired shell necklace blue polo guy! So who is? In court they couldnt produce this shell necklace of Adams- Because he doesnt own one and didnt kill Julie Popovich. Mike Mccann shouldve never put a gun to that poor kids head until he had evidence. Look at the mess that caused and how many more young victims went missing or found in same area as Julie. Coincidence my ass.. Come clean CPD...

I feel very strongly that Brian's death ( I believe that he is no longer alive) stemmed from love and jealousy. Brian's killer is a man who had strong feelings of attraction and love for hi; although they were not returned. The killer thought that he finally had a chance to 'be' with Brian. But when it didn't turn out the way he expected the situation turned violent. Someone should examine the 'circle of friends' including this Clint to see who could be the person that held his love and desire for Brian inside and had it explode in violence the night Brian was killed.

I have a strong sense that Brian has passed on. He left with someone he knew and he was under the influence. I keep feeling that he is somewhere in the oval, in a body of water possibly mirror lake? Has anyone checked in or around the oval or mirror lake?

There is a strong sence of hate involved with this mans dissapearance, I think a head trauma is also involved. Something to the right side of the head between the temple and eye.

Clint is guilty. GUILTY. Only someone with something to hide would refuse to talk work with police.

I grew up around the circle from Brian. He actually rode my bus until he was old enough to drive. This whole situation is very wierd and horribly tragic. I feel so awful for the position that Derek, his little brother, is in. My heart and best wishes go out to him.

And if anyone knows what has happened to him but isn't coming forward, think about Derek. He's lost his family in the matter of a couple years. At least he could have some peace if someone came forward and put this mystery to rest.

There is no such thing as psychic powers. When used in police investigations, they are a colossal and foolish waste of time and manpower. Anyone who thinks that a "reputable" psychic exists is a fool.
