The Lantern will welcome John Milliken to its staff Tuesday as he assumes the role of general manager for the publication.
Former Cleveland Plain Dealer managing editor Tom O'Hara previously served both as general manager and adviser to The Lantern, but the School of Communication decided to return to its previous format by splitting up the two positions.
Milliken will oversee the newspaper's business operations, while O'Hara will focus on editorial content and management of the newsroom.
Milliken has worked in the newspaper industry for more than 35 years and was the associate publisher for American Community Newspaper's Columbus office, which manages several publications including Columbus Monthly and Columbus C.E.O.
"I'm really excited about the challenges and opportunities for growth at The Lantern," Milliken said.
Milliken said that he wanted to hear feedback from students, faculty and alumni to see where they would like to see The Lantern progress. He has already had several conversations with faculty, and is establishing relationships with general managers of other college publications.
"We're thrilled to have him on board," said Carroll Glynn, director of the School of Communication. Glynn said she believes Milliken has great ideas on how to build advertising revenue, develop the business aspect of the newspaper and improve the newspaper's Web presence. She also said she has been appreciative of the patience people have had with the newspaper's recent transitions.
"I hope students and faculty will help work with The Lantern to produce a better product," Glynn said.
"It's going to be a fun job," Milliken said.
