Every quarter, Alpha Psi Lambda National Inc., a co-ed Latino fraternity, hosts two roundtable discussions about current Latino issues. Tuesday, Nov. 4, the fraternity collaborated with the Multicultural Center to host the roundtable called "Y Tu Quien Eres?" The topic of the event was HIV/AIDS and the Latino community.

Guests at the event heard guest speaker Emily Van Buren, of the Columbus AIDS Task Force. The focus of the discussion was how the Latino community is increasingly affected by HIV/AIDS and what can be done to stop this problem.

"In the end, the event was fantastic," said Jennifer Caceres a second-year in biology and recruitment chair for Alpha Psi Lambda. "There was a bigger turn-out at the session than there had been in the past."

The fraternity also hosted the sixth annual International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on Wednesday, Nov. 5. The group collaborated with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. to host the event.

The event commemorates the death of three female political activists who worked in the Dominican Republic during the '60s. Their death has become a symbol of the crisis of violence against women in Latin America.

The event this year featured Nancy Radcliffe, a sexual violence education program coordinator with the Office of Student Life. There was also a candlelight vigil to honor women who suffer from violence and a toast to recognize the global issue of gender violence.

"This event, every year, sheds light on an issue that can sometimes be forgotten, but should always be remembered in order to further the elimination of violence against women," said Miguel Lopez, a senior in microbiology and dean of pledges for Alpha Psi Lambda.
