A 26-year-old man says he was assaulted after a pick-up basketball game on an Ohio State court late in the night on Sunday, Aug. 9.

According to police reports, the man was playing basketball at one of the courts near Highland and East 11th avenues, at the south end of the OSU campus, at 11:50 p.m.

Witnesses say that after the game ended, a man on the losing team elbowed the victim. When he told the man from the losing team he was taking the game too seriously, the man became angered and repeatedly punched the victim in the face.

The other men on the court broke up the assault. They said the didn't recognize the suspect, who ran away after the assault.

The victim was treated at OSU Hospital for swelling in his cheek and forehead.

Student robbed, assaulted

A student reported to police that he was assaulted and robbed by three or four men early Sunday morning near 17th Avenue and Fourth Street.

According to reports, the men approached the student, beat him and stole his wallet. The only descriptions of the attackers are two white men. One was tall and the other was wearing a red "Tapout" shirt, the student reported.

The student was taken to OSU Hospital and treated for injuries.

Gunman thwarted in attempted robbery

An armed man tried unsuccessfully to rob a man who was walking to school Thursday morning just south of the OSU campus.

The 20-year-old victim told police he was walking with a backpack on when he noticed a man following him. When the student stopped to light a cigarette, the man approached him and asked for one. When the student refused, the man said, "Whatcha got in the bag," according to police reports. The student replied "nothing" and began to walk away.

The suspect then grabbed the backpack and tried to pull it away, but the student spun away. When the student got out his cell phone to call 911, the man revealed a black semi-automatic handgun and demanded the backpack. Once again, the student refused and began walking away, so the man hit him in the head with the gun.

The student continued walking, though, and when he called 911 the would-be robber fled.

After gunshots, bullet found in home

A 70-year-old man reported hearing gunshots near his Fifth Street home last Tuesday and says he later discovered one of the bullets lodged in a wall inside his home.

The man told police he heard eight gunshots between 1 and 2 a.m. near his home in the 1300 block, but didn't notify the police until Friday afternoon when he noticed that a bullet had travelled through the house and into a wall in a spare bedroom.

There were no other available reports notifying police about gunfire in the area.
