A myriad of stolen items, including digital cameras, GPS navigation systems, car stereos and televisions, will be on display at the Columbus Division of Police's Stolen Property Office Wednesday.More than 1,000 stolen items, ranging from power tools to laptops, were seized as a result of multiple search warrants from an April 2008 case involving alleged thief Hung Huynh.
"We're guessing that the total dollar amount of the stolen property is about $500,000," said Sgt. Richard Curry of the Columbus Division of Police. "It's hard to say because there are so many items."
Although Curry said most of the property was stolen from construction-related businesses and primarily consists of tools and equipment, he said some of the items could belong to college students.
"We recovered a few laptops," Curry said. "Some of the items were from Union County; however, most of the items were from Columbus."
There are two requirements for victims to be able to claim their stolen property. The theft victim must have filed a police report and must have the report or report number available. The victim must also be able to identify his or her property by serial number, markings or unusual characteristics.
Curry said he encourages students to file police reports immediately after property is stolen so that when a recovery is made, police can quickly identify the items.
Huynh is currently under indictment for 57 felonies in Union County, according to a Columbus Division of Police press release.
The public viewing will be from noon to 5 p.m. today at the Columbus Police Property Room, located at 1250 Fairwood Ave.
