The Pyramid American poster company has set up shop at various spots around Ohio State for students looking to spruce up their dorm rooms and apartments.
There are some posters such as Vincent Van Gogh's "Starry Night" that are always big sellers, but "The Notebook" and "Wedding Crashers" are posters that came close to selling out on Friday, Poster Tour Director Eric Erdoes said.
Fortunately for students, Pyramid American restocks posters on the weekends.
Erdoes said that because classes had not yet started and due to the multitude of events on the Oval the first week the company was busy. Pyramid American had to stock up on the weekends, so students would be able to find what they wanted.
Abby Steiner, a freshman art major, bought three posters at the sale by the Union.
"I bought 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off', Van Gogh and 'Mallrats.' Two of them are my favorite movies and the other is my favorite artist," Steiner said.
She said she paid $23.
"It was worth paying, I guess. Being a poor college student, I could have paid less," she said.
Steiner said that she bought another poster of "Edward Scissorhands" on High Street, and does not plan on buying any more.
Julie Hudson, a junior exercise science major, said she came to the poster sale by the Union looking for the Fiji sunset.
"I went there over the summer, so that's why I want it," Hudson said.
She added that she would go to allposters.com to try and find what she was looking for, but first she will try some of the other sales on campus.
The Pyramid American locations are open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., but Erdoes said, "if it's real busy we might stay open later."
Erdoes has been working for Pyramid American for 14 years. He said a friend was working for Pyramid American and then he started to work there as well.
"It's just seasonal, at the beginning of semesters when students are moving into their dorms," Erdoes said. "It's nice if you have a flexible lifestyle, and can take off seasonally because it pays well."
Erdoes is an antiques dealer in Santa Fe, N.M. most of the year, but at the beginning and end of the tour Erdoes goes to Yonkers, N.Y. and loads the trucks for the tours. He spends a week in July getting the posters ready to go out on tours, which usually last four to eight weeks.
"It can be really trying at times, but I like the seasonal aspect, that I can go out and make a pile of money and then go do my thing at home."
Erdoes said some of the difficult aspects of his job include dealing with mobs of students, weather problems when outdoors, logistical nightmares and having to load in difficult situations, like stairs.
"It's very demanding, it's long hours. Our open hours are 9 to 6, but it takes us about an hour to set up and take it down. And then there is paperwork to do at the hotel when the night is over."
Despite the tension of his job, Erdoes said that he has no plans to leave.
Pyramid American will be on campus through Sept. 29 at the Ohio Union, Scott Hall and Woodruff and the Numbers Gardens.
