Fifteen students from the Colleges of Arts and Sciences and the Fisher College of Business immersed themselves in Chicago's vibrant financial district Friday, participating in an annual event with students from other Big Ten schools.

Diversity on LaSalle Street gives students the opportunity to talk with representatives from companies in the fields of banking, financial services, consulting, insurance and accounting, said Sarah Hill, assistant director of Undergraduate Career Services and Education at the Fisher College of Business.

"The diversity of the event refers to the variety of companies with which students have the opportunity to connect, as well as the diverse pool of student attendees from universities in the Big Ten consortium," Hill said.

Representatives from major financial corporations had the chance to market internships and jobs to students, while students had the chance to network with top executives and employees in the field, said Scott Kustis, program coordinator of Internships for the Colleges of Arts and Sciences Career Services Office.

"It's a really great networking opportunity," Kustis said. "Students gather career ideas and hear about becoming established in Chicago's financial district."

From 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., students participated in a variety of activities, including company presentations from CEOs, a luncheon to meet with executives, a reception with company recruiters and an alumni event.

Allison Hren, a junior in finance and accounting in the Fisher College of Business, said she thought the event was a great way to learn about the different opportunities available in her major.

"I learned about the importance of diversity in the corporate world," Hren said. "It brings new ideas to the table and encourages out-of-the-box thinking."

Junior Kyle Dicke is a finance and accounting major interested in investment. He said the event taught him much about his career interest.

"I met with recruiters and employees from Citadel Solutions and Ariel Investments," Dicke said. "Both companies explained what it was like to work for their company as well as the investment industry in general."

Dicke said it was also interesting to spend a day with other Big Ten students.

"It was a chance to see what life is like at different business schools around the country," he said.

OSU students have been attending Diversity on LaSalle Street for the past five years. Kustis said students apply to participate by submitting an essay explaining their career interests and why they would like to attend the event.
