I need to express my disappointment at the outcome of the presidential election. However, I would have been disappointed with a Kerry victory as well. The realization that there was no viable choice became apparent during John Edwards' rabid defense of the Israeli occupation during the vice presidential debate. George W. Bush, not to be outdone, harped on "securing Israel" through most of the second presidential debate. John Kerry countered with more pro-Israel sentiment in a battle that was not about jobs, education, health care or social security, but rather which candidate could prove themselves more strongly tied to Israel.
Republicans and Democrats alike are hypocritical regarding the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Conservatives who condemn abortion as murder have no qualms about Israeli military strikes which have killed and maimed thousands of children since September 2000. These same individuals are the ones who most staunchly supported our nation's rush to an illegitimate war in Iraq which was not about American security, not about the elusive weapons of mass destruction - it was started to eliminate an enemy of Israel.
On the other hand, liberals who take pride in promoting issues of social justice turn a blind eye to home demolitions, access to medical care and education and freedom of religion when it comes to Palestinians. Ironically, John Kerry, a self-proclaimed globalist, condemned the International Court of Justice's ruling that Israel's barrier wall was illegal.
A nation of hypocrites streamed to the polls and once again, was forced to choose between "the lesser of two evils." Perhaps when we nominate a candidate who puts the interests of American citizens above those of Israel, I will reclaim my right to vote.
