It's that time of year again. The leaves are falling from the trees, the air is getting a bit cooler, and the layers of clothes worn by Ohio State students are becoming more apparent.

Though a majority of students choose to wear OSU hooded-sweatshirts and sweatpants when walking to class, let's not forget that fall fashion has finally arrived.

So what's popular this season?

Katie Popoff, the women's team leader at Urban Outfitters, said it's "denim, denim, and more denim."

"We're selling out of that a lot," Popoff said.

The most popular washes in denim are stone wash and antique vintage.

Jean jackets, blazers, and denim pants can all be found on racks in stores this fall.

Also, the 1920s style is coming back: in clothing like cardigans, pencil skirts and blazers, pink, green and cream are the most popular colors.

"The t-shaped, rounded toe shoes and classic looks of the 20s are becoming more in style," Popoff said. "I like to describe them as pretty clothes.'"

Jewelry is an essential this season as well.

"The more jewelry you wear the better, at this time of year," Popoff said. "Draped necklaces, wearing more than one necklace at a time, and long chandelier earrings are the most popular looks right now."

To add flare to a classic look, like the 20s style, Popoff suggests wearing fun, funky jewelry.

"It's amazing what jewelry can do when you want to dress up your wardrobe," Popoff said.

Belt buckles are also fashionable accessories this season. Popoff said they are selling the same belt buckles for both men and women.

Charlie Umland, men's manager at Urban Outfitters, said the men's fashion hasn't changed much from last fall.

"Fall is going to be preppy again this year," Umland said. "For men, there will be lots of layering, like T-shirts worn over thermals. Graphic tees are our most popular."

"The same (layering) goes for women," Popoff added.

Fall's first layer can be anything from a T-shirt, to a cotton daily hoodie, to a turtleneck sweater - which can be worn under a jacket or blazer.

"You'll see a lot of collared shirts with sweaters over them, and then a jacket over that," Popoff said.

She also said that the skinny knit scarf - the fall necessity to most people - is coming in different styles and seems to be popular every year. They are "basically looked at as just another layer."

Students can dress up their style by wearing a sheer scarf that's lightly speckled with sparkles. Or, they can dress down with a multi-colored knitted scarf for a more vintage appeal.

Pinks, greens, and cream colors are the most dominant colors in scarves this fall.

Just because summer is over doesn't mean it's time to put away those mini skirts. There is still time to wear them before snowfall.

During this time of year, skirts are worn overtop opaque tights with Icelandic booties and a sweater.

"I love walking to class in these boots," said Lindsay Mendelson, a senior in psychology. "They're comfortable to wear, and they keep my feet warm too."

During fall, rough tones like burgundy and forest greens come into play. However, Popoff said that a lot of clothes they're getting are coming in cream and natural colors as well.

Bright colors such as bright pink and turquoise work for this season

"Turquoise is a new accent color for fall," said Gayle Serge, OSU's fashion museum curator. "It's something to wear to update your wardrobe, and it looks great with basic brown colors."

Tweed, which is wool blended with different colors, is also popular in blazers and jackets, Serge said.

Other good fall buys include off-the-shoulder sweaters, broaches, and cabby hats.
