Students and families looking to explore Columbus this July can enjoy a series of free concerts at different settings including a lunch downtown, a Sunday in the park and one of Columbus' largest summer festivals on the River Front.

This is made possible through Music in the Air, part of the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department, which offers events and activities for residents and visitors at little to no expense.

This summer, the city of Columbus will showcase a variety of entertainment as Music in the Air delivers another season of free concerts.

The month of July will heat up with a series of noon concerts on Tuesdays in The Topiary Garden downtown and also on Sundays with jazz in Goodale Park.

The Topiary Garden Concerts, which are sponsored by the Motorists Insurance Group, will begin Tuesday July 8 with a noon performance featuring the Motown and R&B stylings of central Ohio's own party band, Controversy.

According to the Music in the Air calendar of events, concerts will continue each Tuesday through August with the exception of July 22.

The concerts will feature a variety of different artists and musical genres ranging from jazz and soul to rock 'n' roll.

Concerts begin at 11:45 a.m. and last through 1:14 p.m. at Topiary Garden downtown located at 480 E. Town St. on the corner of Washington Avenue.

The month of July also brings Short North Sunday Jazz in Goodale Park beginning with Helen Hagerty and Sweet Sixteen at noon on July 13.

According to the Music in the Air Web site, this series showcases a unique mix of musicians and styles including contemporary jazz with Lisa Webster & Friends as well as the Canta Brazil Quintet's brand of "Brazilian Latin fusion".

Short North Sunday Jazz concerts will be held each Sunday through August from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the gazebo in Goodale Park located in the Short North, just west of High Street. Because of the Jazz & Rib Fest, there will not be a performance on Sunday July 27.

Outdoor culinary skills and styles will be just one of the specialties showcased at the Columbus Jazz & Rib Fest July 25-27 on the downtown riverfront.

In addition to the tastes of award-winning barbeque form across America, the festival features three nights of performances by world class jazz musicians.

According to the Columbus Jazz & Rib Fest Web site, headlining performers at this year's festival will include: The David Sanborn Group, Dafnis Prieto Sextet, Will Bernard and many others.
