If students thought poetry was dead, author and former Ohio State student Jonathan Lee said it will be alive and well at OSU.

Lee (pen name Jaydon Azariah) will host an artist showcase on Saturday in the Hale Center at 3:00 p.m. with performances by poets from OSU, Cincinnati and the Columbus community.

"This will be a great opportunity for people to see some of the best undiscovered, local talent," Lee said.

Adisa Aarons, a senior in construction systems management and agricultural business and one of the performers for the showcase said he wished more students would be interested in poetry since it is one of the greatest forms of artistic expression.

"On a big campus like OSU, I'm surprised that there are not poetry slams every week or at least events where that talent can be exhibited," Aarons said.

The showcase will help give poets some exposure because in many poetry clubs it is near impossible to get on the performance list unless one knows someone in charge, Lee said.

The spoken-word artists will perform on the theme of community involvement. The format of the show will consist of each performer doing a set followed by a Q-and-A session where the audience can meet the artists. Some of the performers for the showcase are: Je'von Calhoun, Adisa Aarons, Gia Calhoun, Jasmine Finch and Jaydon Azariah.

Aquita Harkless, a senior in allied medicine, plans to attend the artist showcase because she has never been to one before and thinks it will be something different to see.

Lee said that he is excited for the event and feels it will be a great attraction for the OSU community.

"Poetry somehow lost its popularity, and it is my hope that this showcase will help bring back the excitement and love for the art," he said.
