It takes just one listen to Scott Stein to see how heavily influenced the pianist, singer and songwriter is by Elton John, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles and Carole King.
The bluesy pop melodies of his voice are a nice departure from the revolving door of indie and alternative rock bands that frequent campus bars.
Stein, 26, who graduated from Ohio State in 2006 with degrees in classical composition and Jewish studies, said he wanted to follow his dream of being a musician.
"I reached a point where I had to figure out what I really wanted to do and I owed it to myself to try music," said Stein, who even spent time at OSU studying engineering.
After graduation, Stein stuck around Columbus trying to figure out his next move.
"I did a record with the band I was playing with ("Two Lane Heartache Waltz"). I did some traveling and saved up money by working on a cruise ship [as a pianist].
"I had a lot of fun, and it makes all the difference."
Stein is about to go on a national tour alongside Jeremiah Birnbaum, a friend of his. One of the stops includes an acoustic performance tonight at the OSU Hillel Student Jewish Center. The show is a highlight for Stein as he gets to return to his former stomping grounds.
"We got a really great gig during the New Orleans Jazz Fest," Stein said. "We figured we might as well stop and play shows. It's going to be more or less an acoustic show. Thought it would be a good idea to do some house concerts because you end up with an audience that's there to see you, [rather] than seeing a bunch of guys watching a game."
Playing a show at the Hillel Center is especially important for Stein, who said he was really involved with the campus organization while being an undergraduate student.
The show begins at 8 p.m. at the Hillel Center. There is no admission fee or cover, but donations are welcome.
