The Ohio State baseball team won its first round game of the 2006 Big Ten Tournament in dramatic fashion Wednesday afternoon. The third-seeded Buckeyes (36-19) defeated the sixth-seeded Purdue Boilermakers (30-26) 2-1 in the 12th inning thanks to an RBI single by senior shortstop Jedediah Stephen.
Freshman pitcher J.B. Shuck (8-4) picked up the win for the Buckeyes while Purdue senior Trae Dauby (4-6) picked up the loss.
Junior left-hander Dan DeLucia started the game for the Buckeyes and pitched 10 innings, allowing only one run and striking out seven while walking two. Purdue starter Dan Sattler pitched nine innings allowing one run. The junior struck out three and walked none.
Sophomore Matt Angle started the Buckeye rally in the 12th by doubling to left-center. He advanced to third on a Dauby wild pitch. After Buckeye sophomore Eric Fryer was hit by a pitch, a Purdue pitching change, a stolen base by Fryer and a pop out by junior Ronnie Bourquin, Stephen stepped up to the plate and knocked the game winner into left field.
With the win, the Buckeyes advance to the second round in the two-and-out tournament. They will face the No. 2 seed Northwestern Wildcats (25-31) this afternoon at 3:35 in the winners bracket.
