For students enrolled in summer quarter classes, it can be difficult to find affordable entertainment outside of the high street bars, but almost every night of the week there is something fun going on at Cooper Stadium, the home of the International League Columbus Clippers.
If watching a professional baseball game of a competitive team is not enjoyable enough, consider the seemingly endless daily promotions the Clippers franchise offers to spectators.
Joe Santry, the director of marketing for the Clippers finds that "Dime-a-Dog Night" is one of the most popular among summer-time scholars.
"For the college student the most popular promotion would be Dime-a-Dog Night, which is every Monday night," Santry said, "but also on Thursdays we have Quencher Corner out in left field where there is food and drink specials."
General Admission tickets for a game are $6 compared to the cheapest tickets available for the Cleveland Indians at $9 and that does not include the full tank of gas required to get there and back.
Santry said he realizes what college students are looking for: a cheap date and affordable beverage and food prices.
"On Fridays before the game we have Party-at-the-Park at our right field pavilion and it has $1 12-ounce drafts, $1 hot dogs and other food specials," he said, "We also have Two-for-Tuesday and that's kind of like a date where you can buy one regular priced ticket and get another free."
It is an interesting year for the Columbus Clippers as a franchise. The final game of this season, on Sept. 1, will mark the last game to be played in Cooper Stadium, the only home for professional baseball in Columbus for the last 76 years.
The nostalgic significance of this season is not lost on Santry and his staff.
"Every weekend we are honoring a different era of the stadium and giving away hats and T-shirts from that era and we think that is pretty special," Santry said.
Next season the franchise will move into a new, state-of-the-art facility currently being built in the Arena District downtown. Huntington Park is a $56 million project and the building will seat 10,000 fans.
The Clippers are currently in second place in the International League West behind the Toledo Mud Hens and are led by slugging infielder Yurendell de Caster with a batting average of .265, eight home runs and 37 runs batted in.
