Klein named USA football captain

Ohio State freshman linebacker Storm Klein was chosen Sunday evening to be one of four captains of the USA football junior national team.

Klein, safety Jordan Lynch, quarterback Bryce Petty and running back David Wilson were selected after a players vote. The captains will wear a "Captains Patch" on their jerseys.

The team is comprised of students 19 and under, entering their first year of college. Klein and offensive lineman Jack Mewhort are the lone OSU representatives on the squad.

St. Ignatius High School coach Chuck Kyle leads the team, which squares off against Team France on June 27 at Fawcett Stadium in Canton.

Lavender selected to Team USA

OSU center Jantel Lavender will join fellow Buckeye Evan Turner in Belgrade, Serbia for the 2009 USA Basketball World University Games.

The two-time gold medalist was named to the women's team Monday by the USA Basketball Women's Junior National Team Committee after several days of trials in Colorado Springs, Colo. Turner was named to the men's team last week.

The competition, which runs July 1-11, is held every two years.

Lavender expressed her excitement with USA Basketball after learning of her selection.

"I'm ecstatic," she said. "I'm really excited to be able to represent my country again and try for another gold medal. I just really want us to get mentally tough. We have a few things we need to tweak. I think it will be a great competition and I'm really excited."

Mullens prepares for NBA Draft

Ohio State fans only had a few months to get to know B.J. Mullens before he bolted Buckeye country for the NBA.

After a short stint at center in scarlet and gray, Mullens now awaits his destiny before Thursday's NBA Draft in New York.

Despite his lack of experience, Mullens' physical tools place him in the first round of many mock drafts. His size (7-feet) and athleticism provide him with a unique skill set among post players.

Nbadraft.net, a Web site focusing solely on draft coverage, predicts the Detroit Pistons will choose Mullens with the 15th overall pick.

Thursday's draft is at 7:30 p.m.
