I saw a terrifying thing last weekend: A young woman of nineteen drinking a beer at a party. Just as I was about to turn and flee this awful sight in terror (thanks to Public Service Announcements, I knew how dangerous the situation was) my guardian angel appeared in the form of an undercover liquor control agent. Before she could overthrow the government or threaten world peace, the liquor control agent quickly (and quite bravely) subdued this heinous monster, handcuffed her and confiscated her beer. Had he not appeared she might have gotten drunk and had a good time just as she has done every weekend for the past few years. The police and liquor control presence this weekend was quite Gestapo-esque. I understand the need to prevent riots, break up fights and control rowdy drunks, but to infiltrate private parties under false pretenses was completely uncalled for. The Lantern reported last Friday that 25 extra liquor control agents would be brought in. That is a great waste of manpower. I’m sure most would agree that manpower would be better directed to solving murders, preventing rapes or arresting crack dealers. Even jaywalkers pose more of a threat to public safety than the girl arrested for enjoying a beer. After the girl and a few others were arrested the police shut the party down. This pissed off 200 drunks and forced them into the street, creating excellent conditions for a riot. Hopefully in the future (Michigan weekend) the police will be more understanding and less confrontational, otherwise it seems violence is inevitable.
