More minorities will create problems

I am a freshman at the diverse Ohio State University. Since arriving on this campus, I have experienced various forms of discrimination. I feel I am being discriminated against because I am Caucasian. Professor Mityagin’s opinions published in the Oct. 18 issue of the Lantern have been the most sensible comments I have heard on the Diversity Plan. President Kirwan’s plan to bring more minority faculty and students here is ridiculous. Why should minority students receive more scholarships and opportunities because they are minority? I could understand this plan if the minorities were doing well, but according to the graduation rates presented in Professor Mityagin’s article this is not the case. It seems the less likely one’s chance of succeeding in college is, the more scholarship opportunities arise. The Diversity Plan is just one form of discrimination on this campus. Another example of discrimination is the presence of all-African American floors in residence halls. To me, this is a form of segregation promoted by the university. Nowhere on my housing application did I see a box I could check for an all-Caucasian dorm. Why? Because this would be discrimination and lawsuits would be filed against the institution. If President Kirwan wants to promote ethnic diversity and unity, maybe he should consider revoking these all-African American floors in residence halls. I do not think President Kirwan’s plan will heal the racial issues of this campus. By bringing more minorities, the plan will add to the problem at hand. If he wants to encourage communication between groups, he should deal with the students that are already here.
