North Market is one of Columbus’ highest quality food markets, featuring freshly made artisan breads, gourmet meats and cheeses, aromatic herbs and everything in between. North Market also hosts workshops by local vendors on any given day. This December, North Market will unite these elements into a weekend of food, holiday tips and crafts during its annual North Market Open House and Craft Extravaganza.

North Market has had a holiday open house for years, and in 2005 it added the craft extravaganza portion of the event, said Mary Martineau, director of marketing for the North Market.

On an everyday basis, North Market accommodates merchants specializing in baked goods, produce, meat, seafood, dairy, beverages, international groceries, cookware and gifts. For its Open House and Craft Extravaganza, North Market’s merchants will still be open for food shoppers, but with a few holiday extras. The open house gives guests a chance to sample suggested holiday foods from North Market merchants as well as learn tips for various holiday activities.

Outside on the Farmers’ Market Plaza, there will be Christmas tree sales from local farmers and live holiday music from Willie Phoenix, Suite Strings and Miss Molly. David Wible, executive director of North Market, will be roasting chestnuts and pretzels for guests.

The Craft Extravaganza will be inside on the second floor of North Market. It features 45 local vendors and artisans selling their handmade goods. More than 80 vendors applied through an open-application process. A jury then decided on the final 45.

“Although there will probably always be a certain number of returning vendors who have participated in the event since its inception in 2005, we also have a healthy dose of new vendors,” Martineau said.

About one-third of the vendors are new this year, including Kelly Burt, Claynimals, Flying Wishes, 4 Healthy Paws, Honeyrun Farm and Jennifer Sadler Designs.

The North Market Open House and Craft Extravaganza is just like North Market’s demographic — it runs the gamut, Martineau said.

Because local merchants will share knowledge about their products, patrons can take away useful holiday tips. Students can browse the crafts in search of specialty gifts for friends and family. Children can watch Joy Unspeakable, the living Nutcracker toy soldier statue. And all guests can enjoy the food samples and live holiday music.

“The past years’ turnout [have] been excellent, and this year should be no exception. Shopping is fun for everyone, and North Market is perfect for one’s local shopping needs,” Martineau said.

The North Market Open House and Craft Extravaganza will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 5 and and from noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 6. Parking is available for 25 cents an hour for up to two hours. OSU students can use their BuckIDs to ride the No. 2 COTA to North Market. Admission is free.
