A 65-year-old male bicyclist died after being hit by an Ohio State Campus Area Bus Service bus near the intersection of Chittenden Avenue and Summit Street June 26.

The bus, which was on the East Residential route, was driving southbound in the right-hand lane of Summit Street behind the bicyclist, Raymond Hursey, at about 1:45 p.m., according to a Columbus Division of Police report.

The 21-year-old male OSU student driving the bus told police he saw Hursey steer closer to the curb of the street in between two parked cars and believed Hursey meant to let the bus pass. As he drove past Hursey, though, the driver reportedly saw Hursey become unsteady and then fall under the bus’s right rear tire, according to the report.

A 46-year-old male university non-affiliate witness told police he was unsure if Hursey hit the parked car before falling underneath the tire, according to the report.

Hursey was in “serious critical condition” after the accident, and the witness was instructed on how to perform chest compressions over the phone because Hursey was not breathing. By the time the medics arrived, however, Hursey was breathing again, according to the report.

Hursey was taken to the OSU Wexner Medical Center and died from his injuries at 4:35 p.m. that day.

Sergeant Brooke Wilson, head of the Accident Investigation Unit, said there were no charges pressed or citations issued in the case. He said, however, the investigation is still ongoing until the autopsy report of the deceased is retrieved. Wilson said the report typically takes about eight weeks after the incident.

Lindsey Komlanc, OSU spokeswoman for OSU Administration and Planning, said in an email that the driver of the bus is still an active employee with Transportation and Traffic Management. She said the student has been an employee since June 2012, and has not had any previous accidents.

Komlanc said Transportation and Traffic Management has been conducting its own investigation into the crash based on the facts of the Columbus Police investigation.

“TTM has a thorough review process. This process includes a review and understanding of the facts presented in the traffic crash investigation … as well as a review of any other relevant records,” Komlanc said.

The driver of the bus declined to comment.

Immediate attempts to reach Hursey’s family Wednesday were unsuccessful.

Some OSU students said the accident raised their awareness of the dangers of cycling on and near campus.

“It is saddening to hear that a fellow bicyclist got hurt. It makes you think about how easy stuff like this can happen, especially on campus,” said Ben Lyon, a third-year in health sciences who rides his bike to class.
