Aging Kroger on High to be rebuilt

The 39,000 square foot grocery store dubbed "Kro-Ghetto" by many Ohio State students has seen better days. Officials say there are more good days to come.

The aging Kroger store located at 1350 N. High St., near King Avenue, is being replaced by a larger store that will edge into the parking lot of the existing property. One of the closest grocery stores to OSU's campus, the revamped store aims to address concerns from some students, said Beth Wilkin, a Kroger spokeswoman.

Some students have complained about problems with meat at the store. Others said fruits and vegetables are poorly maintained.

"The produce department is awful," said Heather Williams, a second-year law student at OSU. "There are fruit flies around all of the produce."

Wilkin said the new store will be larger, an estimated 59,000 square feet, and will include "advancements in refrigeration and lighting."

"Obviously we want a better shopping facility to offer specialty products and a much larger and expanded variety of items for our customers," she said.

Still, some said they aren't likely to visit the new Kroger, complaining about its location.

It's "a sketchy area to begin with," said Byron Broussard, a fourth-year in political science. He called it "the worst Kroger I've ever been to."

He, too, complained about the produce department and said that "the meat department is deplorable. I won't buy meat from that store unless it's prepackaged and vacuum-sealed."

Other students are OK with the store as it stands.

"I love this store," said Nick Johnson, a doctoral student studying musicology. "It's right by my house."

Wilkin declined comment about how much the new Kroger's will cost.

Right, chain stores regularly ship bad meat to the poor neighborhoods. And you know this how? Stupid speculation to bait racism and classism BS.

Chain stores will regularly ship meats/produce that are close to expiring or are in poor condition to poorer areas, where they can sell them & still make some sort of profit. A revamped "Kroghetto" won't change that fact. Campus and community shoppers deserve a better selection.

Here is the deal, if you walk two blocks past Gateway, you are in the hood.

People stock their stores based on the demographic of the people that go there. Though that store gets campus shoppers, the majority of the shoppers there are people from the previously mentioned hood. So they aren't going to carry things that, say, the Kroger on Olentangy River or Giant Eagle will. If you don't like what they have or just don't like it at all, go somewhere else.

I have been to this Kroger dozens of times, all without incident. The sense of entitlement some students have here is deplorable. If you have a problem with the selection or cleanliness of the store, that's one thing, but if you say you refuse to shop somewhere because of how some of the other customers look, you need to grow up. Being in college doesn't automatically entitle you to nicer things all the time, nor does it justify making generalizations about low-income people. If I worked at that Kroger, I would be GLAD you were spending your parents' money somewhere else.

I would'nt build a store in the ghetto. I don't like shopping in the ghetto. Having to keep an officer posted at the door tells me all I need to know about that area and building a new store isn't going to keep the trash out.Try finding a safer location for the students to shop at, that's who DESERVES a better place to shop, not the riff raff that causes trouble for everyone else!

My daughter lived down in that area for a while and I would shop at Krogers once and a while for her. I thought at that time the selection of food was very limited but I can see where the OSU students need a store like this near by. The people who live in that neighborhood deserve a higher quality store like anyone else. I met some very nice people on my daughters street and she lived in the hood and taught at the elementary school there.

I used to go to the Kroger when I needed something quick. Funny story, the first time I went, someone had been maced/pepper sprayed in the front and it began to spread through the store.

Anyways, its dirty..pretty ghetto as noted..but in a quick fix, it will do (minus most meats and produce).

I mean comon, it isn't in a bad area?! There is a police officer posted at the door for all the hours it is open.

This Kroger is great! Very convenient if you're on campus. Doesn't have some of the fancier items that Krogers in better areas have, but you see a different population of people than you would at the stores in Upper Arlington and Grandview. If you think the area is bad, you've lived a pretty sheltered existance. I agree with the other commenters, students need to get out of the OSU bubble and see more of Columbus.

Does anyone know when this Krogers store was built? I was a student at OSU from 1978 to 1982. As I recall, it was built around 1979 or 1980. That's not that old. Why hasn't it been maintained?

kro-ghetto is definitely a sketchy area. i love shopping at krogers but this one is definitely subpar so a revamping is a definite welcome improvement

Everything at Kroger is insanely overpriced. I shop at Aldi instead, or Giant Eagle when there are sales. Kroger sales still leave things above MSRP. WTF?

I've never heard this store called Kro-Ghetto, but rather Ghetto Kroger. I agree that the produce and meat sections are terrible, but everything else about this store is fine. The location is fine, it's just that some sketchy people hang out at this store. Students need to leave their bubble of campus once and a while and see that 2-3 blocks down from the Gateway isn't a terrible area.

Bad neighborhood? Really? Grow some thicker skin! Sure east of there is a little rough, but it's basically Short North/Victorian Villiage! I'm sure after the remodel, it will kick the Buttles Giant Eagle - that place sucks for selection.

We who have lived in the 'hood for years fondly refer to it as "The People's Krogers."

The only reason I don't like this Kroger is because it's too small and the selection isn't as wide as at other Krogers. If a new store addresses those concerns, I'm all for it. I live in the area and I know there a lot of people here who don't have the option of driving elsewhere. I think Kroger is to be commended for being willing to invest in the area.
