In an interview Friday with a Columbus TV station, former Ohio State receiver Ray Small said The Lantern "just flipped my words around and make the whole Buckeye Nation hate me."

Below are relevant audio clips from The Lantern's interview with Small.

Small did not immediately respond to The Lantern's request for comment Friday.

Zack Meisel and Latern staff - way to go with this story. Folks in Columbus might not be in your camp but the rest of the country is. Great job...

Ray you're still an idiot and let me tell you why I don't need to listen to any clip or interview that was taken out of context. It isn't a secret that like ESPN, The DIspatch and Lantern have written a million articles AGAINST the Vest and Tat 5 so why would you even grant the interview? Again I don't blame The Lantern for getting a great interview. That's its job. My guess is Ray realized The Lantern made him look like an unsuccessful arrogant fool who didn't succeed in the NFL or in class and blames Tressel. We know if Ray was on the Steelers roster with Heyward he would have NEVER granted interview. I got some fancy cheese to go with that WHINE!!!!! Now I need to go celebrate my baby winning (beating some of the best in the NCAAs) regionals (and teammates) and GRADUATING as a successful Buckeye Student Athlete......not all Buckeyes are arrogant selfish egomaniacs!!!!

@07:25,
I'm quite familiar with FOIA, thank you very much. My question is whether The Lantern falls within the meaning of a "public office" for purposes of R.C. 143.43; I think it probably does, and it'd be fun to make reporters *respond* to a FOIA for a change.

@Anonymous,

Actually, The Lantern isn't shameful. It's the OSU fans that are stupid enough to say anything not portraying the football team in the most positive light positive is shameful. It's the football players, coaches and athletic department that allow rule-breaking to happen that's shameful.

It would seem that The OSU might like to think about setting the record straight and reorganizing the football side of the university. Gordon Gee comes off like someone out of their element concerning actual control of a storied institution such as OSU. If he had any idea of his real job responsibilities he would have fired Jim Tressel within days of the revelation of his consistent lying to the university, the NCAA, and especially the students and fans of The OSU. Ray Small is a small potatoe in this overall controversy. The real culprits are Jim Tressel and Gordon Gee. The OSU board should fire them both.

To OSU '06:

Please self-revoke your degree from Ohio State, unless OSU stands for Oregon State University. I do not wish to be associated with someone who thinks they have a right to call out The Lantern by yourself.

Do you know how much space a full 40 minute audio interview would take up on thelantern.com? Do you realize how much editing would need to be done to the audio to take out all the "ums," extended pauses, worthless garbage that has nothing to do with the interview. OSU '06, please do not make yourself look like ray small with your comments.

The Lantern reporters/editors did the right thing by cutting it to the usable bits. Please research the FOIA before dropping that bomb. That shouldn't be brought up without careful consideration of its use, and you have no idea how its used.

"Any real reporting going on" Are you kidding me? OSU '06, read the story, pick up a newspaper, get out of bed in the morning, go back to college or high school and learn. I can only hope you are not still tied to OSU in any way other than giving the school money to help improve upon the professors who supposedly mentored you while you were here.

Good day.

It is hard to decide who is the trashiest. But we all know the Lantern is nothing but a rag full of children trying to be big time new. Get a grip..... you are a student newspaper and your are rookies. It shows almost every time your write something. ASHAMED of the LANTERN as much if not more than this whole football event. Where is the LANTERN leadership?

For the love of god it's football and a student newspaper. You're acting as if the Lantern is fox news. Get a life, osu 06. Or perhaps, an education. and Get off your high horse.

It saddens me that OSU has people like OSU'06 who apparently earned a degree at this university.

Are Ohio State fans that are damming the Latern serious? Are they that blind and dumb to realize that this kid was dirty when he played. He is cut from the same cloth as Troy Smith who took money, both Glenville guys. Figure it out buckeye nation, the won't be a soft landing for the hard fall.

"Why don't you think and try to answer the question before you ask it? Why do you think a short clip was posted? Who knows how long the interview was -- with all Ray said, I'd guess it would have to be pretty long. Do you know how long it would take to load something like that online, let alone how it would slow the page/server down? And do you really think anyone would listen to the whole interview? The point was made that what was reported was obviously what Ray said."

No, the point was made that the Lantern is apparently scared of posting the entire audio of the interview. Why? Is it because they engaged in unethical conduct? We know from this short clip that Meisel edited some of Small's quotes to make them more damning to the football program. What else happened?

"Calling them shady just makes you sound like you are on "Small's side." Does Ray Small really need any help making himself sound WORSE? Seriously? Get with the program, '06. "

The question I have is why is the Lantern afraid to post the entire interview. Did Meisel tell Small that they were doing a hit piece and were looking for a disgruntled player to "blow the whistle (wink)"? Or is Meisel just afraid that if the entire interview is posted, Small will sound so stupid that no one will take Small seriously?

"YOU and NO ONE ELSE would know anything was even going with OSU's football program, athletes, NCAA, etc. if it were not for the press."

What does this even mean?

Given their sense of entitlement and arrogance, I'm assuming that "Voice of Reason" is a Lantern reporter or j-school student. In their view, we should be grateful that the Lantern does our thinking for us, and presents with what they think we need to know, and nothing more. It's ironic, given the media's demand for transparency in every other aspect of life, that the media insist they are honest and that we are not entitled to raw data or unfiltered information.

Their job is to report what was said. If they posted the whole interview, someone would have had a problem with it. If they included a question, someone would have had a problem with that too. YOU and NO ONE ELSE would know anything was even going with OSU's football program, athletes, NCAA, etc. if it were not for the press. Would you rather be left in the dark or to have the facts laid out before you? That's their job. Stop criticizing it and being ignorant.
