Jim Tressel resigned Monday, ending speculation about the former Ohio State football coach's job status.

On Wednesday, President E. Gordon Gee attempted to put an end to speculation about athletic director Gene Smith's job security.

Gee said Smith's job is "safe" at a university-sponsored flash mob.

Gee did say, however, that the university's compliance department is under review.

"If we find there are people who are not holding the standard of the university, then obviously we'll deal (with them)," Gee said.

OSU spokesman Jim Lynch told The Lantern on Wednesday that the university had no plans to dismiss OSU's compliance department.

Football coach Jim Tressel resigned Monday after 10 years and one tumultuous offseason at OSU. Tressel was facing a five-game suspension for failing to report his players' NCAA violations. The NCAA suspended quarterback Terrelle Pryor, running back Dan Herron, receiver DeVier Posey, offensive lineman Mike Adams and defensive end Solomon Thomas on Dec. 23 for five games for selling memorabilia and receiving improper benefits. Linebacker Jordan Whiting also earned a one-game ban.

Gee said he learned of Tressel's resignation Sunday night after the coach returned from a vacation in Florida.

"I think that very clearly, (Tressel) in the end understood the kind of scrutiny he was under," Gee said. "In my experience with Jim — which has been over three years — he has always held the university at a standard that he wanted to support."

At a March 8 press conference to announce Tressel's suspension, when asked about Tressel's job security, Gee replied, "I just hope he doesn't dismiss me."

Gee had yet to speak with the media since Tressel's resignation. Lynch told The Lantern on Monday that Gee was "out of the state" for the day.

"I don't think there's been a news blackout," Gee said about the amount of attention being placed on the OSU football program. "I think I'm always surprised about the power of Ohio State and our brand. I felt a little bit like I was in a tsunami."

Smith and Doug Archie, director of OSU's compliance office, have been unavailable for comment.

Archie was named director of compliance on June 12, 2006. He earned about $114,000 in 2010, according to collegiatetimes.com. Chris Rogers, the assistant director of compliance, earned about $81,000 last year. The athletic department's website lists six members of the compliance department and one intern.

Gee said changes could be on the horizon if the university deems the compliance department's efforts substandard.

"If it's not working," Gee said, "then we'll make it work."

Pryor and his band of morons need to be thrown off the team and expelled from the university. Why should Tressel take the fall for their greed, stupidity and disrespect of the team, the school and it's traditions. Get Pryor and his merry band of reprobates out of there now. Send the message that needs to be sent.

Its not a question of whether or not Gee and Smith knew. Its a question of whether, in their position, with their resources, having done an investigation in December, they should have known. Their culpability lies in perpetuating the cover up by not doing a thorough investigation and uncovering what SI did. If you don't want to find problems, you won't.

Lets get real:
Dont give people things, tell them its their's and then hang them for selling it.
Tressel did wrong and should be gone (he is a hell of a coach, but if I ever buy into the roll model concept, it is a coach, at any level)
Pay these kids...not annually, but guarantee any student athlete that completes 4 years (or 3) a certain amount of cash to start their lives with IF they play by the rules.
Gee is the rainmaker...its true in everty aspect of life...get over it...there is a Gee at every company...its probably why you have a job...the only things anyone talks about are the bad things that person does
and finally...if you have to Hate Ohio State or USC or North Carolina, its because nobody cares enough to "investigate" your alma mater...if you have one

I love how people comment on here, either putting down the university or putting down JT, Gee, Smith, etc., but don't have the guts to use their names, but comment anonymously. My hats off to those of us that can make comments on this site and not hide behind an anonymous tag.

Silly in a bow tie! Gee, now I can have my candy and cookies! The bad man is gone, even though he was good before my University put the screws to little Jimmy.

Is Gee's job safe?

Did Gee say he hopes Smith doesn't fire him?

Gee shows his colors all the time. Bailed on OSU for Brown... they got tired of him and his X wife. Went to Vandy and his "X" wife got caught smoking dope in the mansion.... Vandy embarrassed.... Wife is tenured at Vandy any ways. Gee leaves wife and Vandy behind. OSU.... again.... and again more messes and poorly handled events. If this guy was not a big rain maker they would have all fired him way before he left every time.

Gee us showing how goofy he is! He did make the statement that Wacky Zacky quotes. "I just hope he doesn't dismiss me." Thanks again Zack for a piece of worthless journalism. Stay in economics!

I have to agree with Play Fair. Tressel knew the rules, and he broke them. He covered up what was going on. That's why he got fired. The compliance department can't act if they don't know that something is wrong, and ultimately, it's the responsibility of the coaching staff and the players themselves to make sure that the rules are being followed. But even more than that, I have to agree with the poster who asked whether or not these "athletes" have parents. And you really have to wonder if any of these players has a conscience. It sure doesn't seem like it. The heck with going after Gene Smith. It's time to fire Pryor and the whole Tat5 group of idiots.

How on earth is Gene Smith safe? The compliance department is safe as well? You've got to be kidding me. The head coach should be coaching and the compliance department should be educating and policing the spoiled brats we call athletes. As for Smith, did he never walk through the player's parking lot and wonder where the Escalades came from? I'm a big OSU fan who is embarrased and ashamed of my beloved school.

as for Ray Small, obviously he never paid attention to rules.

Do these players have parents? Have they learned right and wrong at all? Do they have any ethics or do they feel they are "due" things based solely on being a football player.
