The last few lines of the "Pledge of Allegiance" are some of the most well-known and celebrated. But two Ohio State students believe that undocumented immigrants, including those in Columbus, have been excluded from the American promise of "liberty and justice for all" for too long.

Andrea Velez, a fourth-year in Spanish, and Kyla Snow, a fourth-year in comparative studies and Spanish, have coordinated an event Friday to raise awareness of the "broken immigration system" in the United States and to advocate for immigration reform.

The event, called "And Justice for… All?" will feature talks about immigration law and reform efforts. Immigrants who have navigated the complexities of the immigration system will also share personal stories.

Velez and Snow are enrolled in Spanish 689, a service-learning course. The class is titled "Spanish in Ohio: An Experiential Course." The students have to perform 100 hours of real-life language use and community service in the Latino community.

The students also have to design a final project with the goal of having a "lasting effect," in the Latino community, Snow said. The event is Snow and Velez's project for the class.

The two became involved with Reform Immigration For America, a national group that advocates for comprehensive immigration reform, this quarter during the class.

At the first meeting they attended, the group discussed Ohio Senate Bill 35, which is being debated now. The bill is an expansion of program 287G which would allow state and local law enforcement officials to enforce federal immigration laws.

Velez said she worries that, under this proposal, undocumented immigrants would be "more fearful of coming out of the shadows" if they are the victim of a crime for fear of deportation.

Nick Torres, the statewide, grassroots coordinator for Reform Immigration For America, said there are several "pillars" of comprehensive reform that the group is built on.

Protecting the rights of undocumented workers is one. He said these workers are often targeted by unscrupulous employers because they can be treated poorly and often don't or can't complain.

Another is an earned path to citizenship. Torres said alternatives, such as the mass deportation of about 12 million undocumented immigrants, were unrealistic.

"It's really expensive," he said, "and it's not in line with American values. America is a country of immigrants, of course."

Torres also mentioned the Dream Act which might hit home for college students. This legislation, introduced in Congress numerous times (most recently in March 2009) would allow the children of undocumented immigrants, many who have been in the country most of their lives, to be eligible for citizenship if they completed a college degree or served in the military for two years.

Under current laws, undocumented young people are not able to go to college even if they grew up and attended elementary and high school in the U.S.

Although immigration is a hot-button issue, Velez said often the human face of the issue remains hidden.

"When it's not seen, people don't really have a heart for it. If you don't see these people and their situation, it's harder to feel for them."

Snow said working with the campaign had opened her eyes to the reality of others' lives, and she hoped to share these stories at the event.

Late last year, the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles canceled the license registrations of people who couldn't provide a social security number. Snow said many of the people she spoke with felt it was specifically targeted at illegal immigrants.

The Columbus Dispatch reported that the BMV denied that the new rule was aimed at a particular group.

Snow described one man as near tears while he told her that he had to look for another job because he was worried about driving with an expired registration.

"The desperation is so great," Snow said.

Velez said she hopes students who attend the event learn more about the immigration system.

"We would love for them to get involved in the campaign," she said. "But if nothing else, we want them just to learn more, be more open-minded and have more compassion for immigrants and people who are facing these situations."

"I think that this issue is larger than immigration policy," Snow said. "It's a justice issue."

"And Justice for… All?" will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in Hagerty Hall 180. There will be a special musical guest and free Chipotle. The event is free and open to the public.

It's alright everybody, illegal immigrants mostly just displace poor white males in construction or landscaping jobs. We're just a bunch of slack-jawed racists whose opinions don't matter to the liberal crowd, remember?

It's hard to be in favor of something that is a direct threat to your standard of living. If wanting to protect one's livelihood is racist, so be it.

Sounds like the course requires students to aid illegal aliens- treason?

E-Verify has been under attack by any of the open border organization that represent a list of too many entities, whose only believe system is profit--no matter the consequences to the American labor force, irreversible Overpopulation and a marginalized country. I, personally will fight for it as many other bloggers will, because this foreign occupation must be halted. Some senior politicians under Rep. Gabrielle Gifford (D-AZ) are trying to stop its use, but offering another alternative. This in my mind is just another distraction to impede E-Verify and its growing popularity, throwing in some other new tool abbreviated as NEVA. Yes! E-Verify has been compromised by illegal workers using fake ID, Do you really think that this irregularity cannot be reversed? We have this enforcement tool now and its staying. Bloggers have made sure every American person is aware of it. A number of foreign workers are getting past the verification system. But upgraded, innovation will soon stop all this? E-Verify which--WILL--become permanent application, that will evolve and finally will constitute a fearful computer program to apprehend illegal workers. It will not be undermined by corrupt legislators. The influx of hundreds of thousands more unskilled laborers would impoverish America's unskilled poor even further A growing number of police departments have had a favorable response to the use of the 287 (g) local officer enforcement. But the federal government under powerful politic elites as Sen. Harry Reid, Speaker Pelosi, HMS secretary Napolitano and other suspicious politicians, have made it their business to bring to this country, at least a million moderate legal immigrants a year, with no restrictive way of just importing highly skilled workers. President Obama has made it clear, that he is going to try and pass an Amnesty and--now--having discussions with Sen Chuck Schumer, Sen Lindsey Graham, Rep. Raul M. Grijalva and more who remain hidden. It seems that its up to individual states to enforce the immigration laws, because the Federal government seems to have lagged way behind. California, a known--SANCTUARY STATE--is overrun with illegal people and currently trying to justify a $20 billion dollar shortfall. Many states have seen the errors of there ways and now realized the implications of underestimating their serious budget crisis, caused by the impact of illegal alien families they are supporting. Arizona, Georgia have taken major steps to enforce immigration regulations on their level of government. California has no such enforcement, in fact they haven't even a program of using a permanent E-Verify. Sacramento has disregarded any immigration laws and now have students and professors in universities complaining of budget cuts, because they are unaware or intentionally silent that money is going to supporting welfare programs for illegal foreigners. Yes! Some illegal families pay some taxes, but it nowhere compares to the siphoning off federal, state and municipal public coffers. STARTING WITH MIDTERM ELECTIONS, I PREDICT ILLEGAL ALIENS RIDICULING OUR BALLOT SYSTEM, SPECIALLY IN CALIFORNIA AND OTHER OVERWHELMED STATES BY VOTING. NO PROOF OF NATIONAL STATUS, IDENTIFICATION IS REQUIRED IN MOST STATES.Under the shadow of utra-Liberal assembly in Sacramento, these extremist lawmakers have nearly destroyed there home state, by millions of illegal families stealing public welfare. There are those in Washington who would push through an American-Mexican agreement that would allow illegal immigrants access to the Social Security of every worker in our nation. There are those in Washington who have sold their soul to obnoxious business owners for less tangible gifts, so perpetrating the worst crime available of another- BLANKET-Amnesty. Not only would it cause billions of dollars to process those already here, but criminals would not surrender to immigration authorities and yet another call for Immigration reform would bring millions more banging at the gates to be let in? Its almost like their is no difference in national status between an illegal alien and a true citizen and legal resident, because of the status quo who allowed this believe system. Many of our politicians have committed a capitol offense against the edicts in the US constitution, by allowing monetary corruption in clouding their minds and not stopping generations of illegal immigrants. Republicans are split on the the issue and Democratic with Liberal-extremist leanings think we should share every dollar with indigent foreign nationals. California schools are so overcrowded the children of illegal immigrants are ruining the chances of regular citizens not getting a decent education. We have millions of Americans in our prisons system, so we certainly don't need illegal aliens to house and feed. As usual the open border zealots are screaming , threatening potential court rulings-and perhaps immigration laws against states with a...

Crying racism is not a substitute for an argument or defense.

How is Lou Dobbs racist with Hispanic, Spanish speaking wife, children and in-laws- WHO LIVE WITH HIM!

Slinging acusations is no substitute for facts.

Illegal aliens- the correct term our government uses- do steal jobs that Americans apply for.
HR Scam Helped Illegal Aliens Take Jobs from American Workers
Friday, December 11, 2009, 10:17 AM EST -

Arkansas-based poultry processor George's, Inc. recently broke up a scam within its human resources department at one of its plants in Columbia Furnace, Va. Plant employees were using documents submitted by legal applicants to help illegal aliens get jobs at the plant.
Three employees from within the plant's human resources department copied documents from applicants who were told that there were no jobs at the plant. The employees then sold the documents to illegal workers who were required to forfeit up to $100 per pay period to the human resource employees.
The human resource employees were fired along with the illegal workers, but police were not involved. The break-up was handled by George's, Inc. The scheme likely violated federal labor laws, but without the company's cooperation, federal investigators are at a dead end.

Oh, and illegal immigrants are considered "persons" under the law, meaning they are and should be protected by our laws.

"…An alien is surely a 'person' in any ordinary sense of that term. Aliens, even aliens whose presence in this country is unlawful, have long been recognized as 'persons' guaranteed due process of law by the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments." (Cornell law library)

How ignorant can you guys be? Seriously, a over populated Hispanic population? Considering you are only looking at this in relative terms (i.e. I'm in the white majority and can't handle seeing more than one minority around me), there is nothing to really indicate if there is overpopulation. You are racist; and being racist does not mean that you are correct. Back it up.

But, seriously...

If want to be true to what makes America so great, let us consider the capitalistic society that we live in. If you are for a capitalist society, then you must agree with the fact that government should not have such a significant role in hindering economic forces; which is what immigration is all about. People seeking low-skill jobs and firms that need employees.

The myth that immigrants take away jobs is only a myth; how many people do you know that would like to work in the fields picking crops? The fact that most Americans have a high school degree or GED makes it so that these jobs are no longer desirable. But agricultural jobs aside, without immigrants there will be a 2 million jobs completely left abandoned without Americans to fill, or most importantly, do not want to fill.

Now, the whole issue of crime and drugs (and I can't believe that someone would say that Hispanics are mostly lawbreakers... idiot) is unfounded, unless of course you worship the Lou Dobbs decree. Studies have shown that immigrants, illegal or not, are 4 times less likely to commit crime. In neighborhoods where there are immigrants, believe it or not, crime actually reduces. Drug trafficking occurs because there is a business here in the US. Why don't we just send all the Americans buying drugs to Mexico instead? Wait, that is just stupid. (As is many of these comments here). Also, just because there are Hispanics out there that commit crimes, it does not mean that all do. Hell, I am a LATINA, and no, I never touched drugs, or even a cigarette, my entire life. Never got so much than a parking ticket, ONCE.

Immigrants pay into the system by paying for taxes. (OMG I know!) Furthermore, they pay into Social Security and other programs when using these fake numbers (over $500 Billion and increasing). Studies have found that undocumented immigrants pay close to $2000 dollars each above any, if at all, the benefits they receive.

So now that I got out loss of jobs, crime, and social welfare, and showing that these are myths, let me note that there is a need for comprehensive immigration reform. If we do not want illegal immigrants, FINE, but let us look at the real problem. Let us expand the number of permits, which are only capped at a few thousand a year, so that employees do not need to hire illegal immigrants, and that families can RETURN with enough earned income in hand. Let us see that a beef up border is a waste of money and that it only makes immigrants unable to return. Let us look at the fact that during a recession, low-skill earners are needed for firms that are already strained with the ridiculously high wage rigidities of this economy. Let us see that America is an immigrant nation, which is why we are prosperous.

Amnesty begets amnesty and creates disrespect for the law in general.

This would be Amnesty #8

1. Immigration and Reform Control Act (IRCA), 1986: A blanket amnesty for some 2.7 million ILLEGAL ALIENS

2. Section 245(i) Amnesty, 1994: A temporary rolling amnesty for 578,000 ILLEGAL ALIENS

3. Section 245(i) Extension Amnesty, 1997: An extension of the rolling amnesty created in 1994

4. Nicaraguan Adjustment and Central American Relief Act (NACARA) Amnesty, 1997: An amnesty for close to one million ILLEGAL ALIENS from Central America

5. Haitian Refugee Immigration Fairness Act Amnesty (HRIFA), 1998: An amnesty for 125,000 ILLEGAL ALIENS aliens from Haiti

6. Late Amnesty, 2000: An amnesty for an estimated 400,000 ILLEGAL ALIENS who claim they should have been amnestied under the 1986 IRCA amnesty

7. LIFE Act Amnesty, 2000: A reinstatement of the rolling Section 245(i) amnesty, which covered an estimated 900,000 ILLEGAL ALIENS

It must be nice for Velez and Snow to be from privilaged backgrounds where they and their families aren't directly competing with illegal aliens who reduce wages and eleminate benifits and safety regualtions.

It is a lie to say that illegal aliens who went to school in the U.S. cann't go to college: they can pay international fees like other foriegn nationals.

Why should there be any OUT OF STATE or INTERNATIONAL FEES, if illegal aliens can not only pay U.S. ciitzen rates, but in state rates? Are Velez and Snow trying to eleminate those fee differences also- if not why not.

If you claim to be "undocumented", you are not an immigrant.True Immigrants obey our laws and deserve our support. Those residents without U.S. legal documents are illegal resident aliens. The have not done anything to deserve a pathway to citizenship. Nor do they deserve to "jump the line" ahead of other immigrants patientyly waitng to come to this country. Our immigration system brings in almost 1.5 million immigrants annually. This is more than the rest of the world combined. A "broken system" could never accomplish this.

Illegal aien residents are not entitled to a driver's license. They are not permitted to purchase auto insurance. They can't legally hold a job and must use false documents to obtain one.

There is no lustice in giving illegal aliens a pathway to citizenship,

A comprehensive immigration reform is a MUST! This is the civil rights battle of our time. And Billy Bob will lose! He is on the wrong side of both history and demographics. Racism always loses in America. No human being is illegal.

It is not fair for people to think that illegal aliens should get an immigration reform with amnesty or a pathway to citizenship! how can people think this, without thinking about what this will be doing to Americans who have come to America the right way? it is too many illegal aliens in America, and they are rapidly multipling by the millons! it is not fair for America to be so over populated by millions of illegal aliens from Mexico or any other country! it is not fair that millions of illegal aliens are helping their Hispanic race to become over populated in America with the help of amnesty or a path to citizenship, by the millions every time they and all their advocates tend to hollar about their American dreams! Also it is not fair that illegal alien are helping them selves to become the over populated Hispanic race by our American birthright laws, which allow them to born their children by the millions here, getting granted an automatic citizenship which is a sneaky amnesty for millions of their children all alone!!! All of this is getting in the way of Americans, we are being push by the over population of the Hispanic race! who are mostly lawbreakers! all of this is being so terribly sugarcoated, illegal aliens are getting lot of catering to, regardless of thei illegal status in America, it is as if our lawmakers, who are our American politicians are afraid of illegal aliens in America, so much until they just allow them to just do anything they want to do in America, that is including, finding loop-holes to not abide immigration laws and other America laws. all of them and their advocates use strategies and excuses, to help ignore all of their wrongdoings in America, all of what they do and are allow to get away with, no American are allow to do!

Millions of our low income housings, and sec. 8 programs are given to them, they are the first on the list now, leaving American on a 4-7 years waiting list, they are the first in line to just about every thing on their illegal status!
This is not fair to Americans, and this American dream our President nad congress want to give to illega aliens, is a terrible disaster, it is hurting Americans now, and will be hurting Americans in the future!!!!! Americans are being so force to endure illegal aliens taken over America!!
