Ohio State third-year Micah Kamrass is no stranger to hard work.

Kamrass, pursuing degrees in both political science and economics, is involved in numerous organizations, participates in intramural sports, has worked at the Ohio Statehouse and is even the main character in a published book. He said he thinks the title of Undergraduate Student Government president would be a nice addition to this list.

A 2007 graduate of Sycamore High School in Cincinnati, Kamrass said he understands his heavy involvement can be challenging, but he manages to keep it all together.

"The busier I keep myself, the more focused I am," Kamrass said. "I keep up on my schoolwork and I don't forget that I'm a student first."

At first, there was a chance that Kamrass was not going to attend OSU.

"I wanted to study political science, so I looked in [Washington] D.C., but I'm an Ohio State football fan and I could save a lot of money going to Ohio State," Kamrass said.

Once at OSU, Kamrass immediately joined USG, where he is now the director of recruitment. In his first two years, he worked at the Statehouse writing speeches for Sen. Ray Miller of Ohio. He is also one of two undergraduate students that sit in on Athletic Council meetings.

His biggest involvement, however, is his affiliation with Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity, Kamrass said.

"I just finished my term as president of AEPi, and sophomore year, I was the vice president of recruitment," Kamrass said. "It was time consuming but a lot of fun."

During his reign, Kamrass helped organize the world's largest barbecue, which raised money for his fraternity's national philanthropy, Chai Lifeline and Faith on 8th, he said. Chai Lifeline helps send terminally ill children to summer camps, and Faith on 8th, a local soup kitchen, is a charity that OSU's BBQ Club supports.

During spring break, Kamrass traveled to New Orleans to rebuild houses destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.

But it's not all work and no play for Kamrass. Being a part of a fraternity has been a social tool, he said.

"I like hanging out with friends and living with 27 guys in a house," Kamrass said. "It is a good social opportunity."

Kamrass is also a self-proclaimed "big sports fan."

"I'm a Reds and Bengals fan and I play intramural flag football, basketball, softball and Frisbee," Kamrass said.

Despite all these extracurricular activities and the rigor of his class work, Kamrass manages to maintain a relationship with his girlfriend, Rachel, who he met during a youth group trip to Israel, he said.

Although she attends Miami University, Kamrass said she is understanding of his schedule. They have been dating for almost two years.

Kamrass also said that his family is a major support system in his life.

"My family wishes I came home a little more, but they have been so helpful with my [USG presidential] campaign," Kamrass said.

He said his brother, Jared, a first-year in journalism at OSU, has assisted him with the campaign, and his sister, Jenna, 25, calls often asking for updates while she is in New York working as a teacher.

Parents Lewis and Renee are "proud of me and very supportive," Kamrass said.

When asked his opinion on Kamrass, longtime friend and campaign manager Brett Chessin said he holds him in high regard.

"Micah is great. We've been best friends since seventh grade," said Chessin, a third-year in political science and international studies. "Micah is the man."

Bradley Pyle, a third-year in business and Kamrass' running mate, weighed in as well.

"We work on lots of things together and have a good working relationship," Pyle said.

Kamrass said his interests include government history, reading and country improvement. His plans after graduation include the possibility of law school and work in politics.

If nothing else, he has already found fame in a book by children's author Diane Hoyt-Goldsmith, called "Celebrating Passover," where he is featured as the main character.

"It's pretty funny," Kamrass said about the pictures of his 9-year-old self featured in the book. "I had a bowl [hair] cut."

Showing up is half the battle. His attendence speaks for itself. Mr. Pyle should have picked a better running mate. Honestly, I would have liked to see someone like ashley and brad as a pair, couple of smart, honest people who are truely there to make this university better.

Quite frankly I'm just glad to see a candidate with real ideas in the mix! I think Micah is qualified and his platform is full of interesting ideas. He seems to genuinely care about us students and wants to listen to our needs. Ya I see he had some attendance problems as a Senator but I think people can grow and mature as leaders. Not to mention I thought he had a great presence at the debate tonight! Just impressed by both his and Brads candidacy!

I share no love for Jordan Davis who I think has done a pretty poor job this year. I just read that article on misfunding a student org and how she did nothing to fix it and skipping out of a Senate meeting to go campaigning? Not cool. How can we expect her to do her job well next year especially with this morally ambiguous behavior? Not to mention I thought she just rambled on at the debate tonight, though Id agree she didnt sound like a ditzy sorority girl. I liked Ashley a lot though. Maybe if the ticket was reversed I'd vote Ashley for President, but you wont catch me voting for Jordan.

All in all I think Micah and Brad are the best choice for undergrads and USG!!!

Regarding another post about when he ran for a senate leadership position against a senior, it was in fact a ridiculous debacle. Toward the beginning of his lone senate term (spring of his freshman year), he ran for Parliamentarian against Stephen Smith, who was running for his third consecutive term. When giving his speech about why the Senators should vote for him as Parliamentarian, he said that because he's young, he could be the Parliamentarian for more than one term, along with other idiotic and nonsensical arguments.

This against somebody running for his *third* consecutive term, who clearly had the experience that Kamrass said is so important. Needless to say, Kamrass lost in his quest to become Parliamentarian. He then went on to miss quite a few Senate meetings (which means he would have been a terrible Senate leader) and rendered his argument completely useless by not running for another Senate term. As a Senator when he did show up, the only things he seemed to care about were getting money for his fraternity and the Jewish sorority. Nothing against those Greek organizations, but his interests seem very limited and he couldn't make reasonable arguments as to why we should support them - one bill he sponsored was for AEPi to get an exorbitant amount of money for some random event that nobody would go to because it conflicted with several huge campus programs.

If push comes to shove and Micah needs to convince Senators, city officials, OSU administrators, etc. to do something they're somewhat reluctant to do, I don't think he can create coherent enough arguments to convince them, whatsoever. I'm not a huge fan of Jordan Davis (although I have a high opinion of Ashley Sinram), but I'll support her because I don't think she comes across nearly as weak or idiotic as Micah.

I like Micah as a person but as a President I don't know. I remember last year in Senate he never came and he actually had to be removed as vice chair of a committee because he didn't go once all year. It kind of sucks because I think he really wants to do a lot, but you can't make a difference if you don't respect the process to just show up. If he couldn't make a Wednesday night meeting more often than not in a given year, what evidence is there that he will hold office hours on the oval....which is kind of dumb anyway...think of winter.

I don't think either team has all the strengths but on balance I think Ashley Sinram has proven that she takes the work seriously, she showed that tonight in the union debate. Jordan seems good too, she looked a little nervous today, but I think they're probably the better team on the whole.

This is ridiculous, The Lantern is clearly biased and both pieces on BOTH candidates are poorly written and focus on irrelevant factors to the election. No one cares (or should care) that Jordan is a dancer and where Micah's family members are as well as his Greek involvement. None of these articles deal with the ELECTION, why candidates are running and what changes to they plan on bringing to USG.

Is it so much to ask as a student for our newspaper to go issue by issue through an election platform and allow us to make informed decisions. I guess, because instead we receive these pieces of journalistic "fluff" which demeans the student's intelligence as well as encouraging superficiality in the voting.

Remember when he ran for that leadership position in senate, and got his ass kicked by a senior? Hilarious -- his ideas were as worthless then as they are now.

I strongly believe that this article does not do justice to Micah Kamrass as a person. I have known all of the candidates for most of my college career, and as a former USG member, I will be voting for Micah mostly because he is the kind of individual the students need as their USG President- he is running because this is something he honestly wants to do, not because he is so obsessed with leadership titles and attention seeking behavior. If you have never been in USG or been involved in campaign leadership, then you will not understand the types of consequences of coming out on a losing team. Micah has been penalized over and over again for taking leadership on Zach and Christina's campaign last year, which is why he was awarded a position in USG GREATLY under his talents and abilities. I see that Jordan and Ashley have taken credit for raising USG Cabinet numbers this year when Micah was actually in charge of recruitment; I do not blame him for not being cabinet member of the year. USG is a very political, complicated organization and if Micah thought that doing other good things on campus for his fraternity, for charities, philanthropy and Athletic Council instead of waste his time in a position that was made up to pacify him, then I think he's smart for doing it. I will also say that while missing so many meetings during his Senate term is unacceptable, many Senators did the same since Senate was wholly unproductive last year and attendance policies were not inforced. Better to get out and do something than sit in a room and accomplish nothing.

I researched the senate attendance and found Micah to have more absences as a representative of students while serving as a senator than anything that can compare to the one full senate meeting that Jordan Davis missed during fall quarter. If I know correctly based off the meeting schedule of Athletic Council, meetings are not weekly. Therefore, Micah's consecutive cabinet absences are not justified by Athletic Council Involvement. The attendance records of the two presidential candidates are incomparable.

It is obvious that both people are writing on this message board, you are not winning anybody over with this stuff...get over it and stop trying to hurt each other and focus on what you are running for. Don't fall into the same political nonsense that is happening today. It is much more about who has more power (Republicans trying to kill the Democrats and vice versa) than actually caring about how the country or in this case the university is run.

You both fail in this aspect...

As someone close to Micah, I have seen the hard work he has put into the Undergraduate Student Government. The biggest reason he has not been at every meeting is his service on Athletic Council. Athletic Council met at the same time as senate while he was a senator and this year, while he was on cabinet, it met during cabinet. It's irresponsible to characterize absences as failing to serve the students, as he was at other meetings serving the students. Over the last two years he has become the USG expert in Athletics and has also made valuable contributions in Senate and Cabinet, while serving as a leader in other student organizations.
If you want to talk about attendance, maybe you should examine why it is that Jordan has failed to fulfill one of her only constitutional duties, attend all senate meetings. Jordan receives $20,000 to attend senate meetings, but she has failed to do that on several occasions, including because she wanted to go and campaign so that she could get another $20.000.

So what has he done? Other than a BBQ and go to class?
80 percent of success is showing up.

Micah has consistently run away from responsibility. I commend him for his leadership of AEPi, but if you really want to know that he's dedicated to leading a university, go look at his attendance records. As a senator, he showed up to about 1/3 of meetings, and as Co-director of recruitment, he disappeared after the first 5 weeks of the quarter. That isn't leadership, frankly. 80 percent of success is showing up.
