People surround Mirror Lake on Nov. 20 for the annual jump before the OSU football game against Michigan.

Repairs to Mirror Lake and the surrounding areas will cost an estimated $24,600, according to Student Life spokesman Dave Isaacs.

Damage was done when an estimated 10,000 to 12,000 students jumped in Mirror Lake Nov. 20, days before the Ohio State football game against Michigan.

Cleanup after the 2011 jump cost about $25,000, with $19,000 worth of damage to the grass and landscaping. The remaining $6,000 in costs came from the university compensation to employees who cleaned and restored the area, Paul Walsh, assistant director of landscape services, told The Lantern in a December 2011 article.

To compare, the average tuition, room and board paid by an undergraduate student attending OSU’s Columbus campus is $20,429 for in-state students and $35,837 for out-of-state students, according to the OSU Undergraduate Admissions website.

OSU defeated Michigan, 26-21, Saturday to complete an undefeated season.

About 16 people were treated at the Wexner Medical Center emergency department and 12 people were arrested in connection with the Mirror Lake jump on Nov. 20, said Ohio State Deputy Chief of Police Richard Morman.

Gee should pay for these repairs out of his own salary! I'm tired of hearing that the university doesn't have funds for more important things such as an expansion of Wilce Student Health Services to accommodate all students who purchase OSU Student Health Insurance. As it is right now, quite a few students buy insurance but cannot be seen at OSU Wilce in a timely manner, so they end up going elsewhere and paying copays! If they can be seen at OSU Wilce, as is their privelege for buying OSU Student Health Insurance, then they would NOT have to pay copays! President Gee certainly has his priorities mixed up!

Like most colleges and universities, making a place look pretty and wasting funds on non essential landscaping. Then people wonder why tuition goes up every year. Basically colleges put everything on a credit card and pass off the cost to students, who get guaranteed loans from the government.

Actually the University hired contractors to repair the area. They (management) dont like to do repairs in house, even though alot of the landscapers have years of experience and degrees, they would rather keep the landscapers picking up trash and wandering around then doing actual work. Also did you see the "REPAIRS" last year? they were piss poor. Im sure that someone is giving some work to a friend or family member.

So you're suggesting Dr. Gee should pick up the tab for cleaning up after the student who annually destroy this part of campus?

"I wish the university would embrace this tradition for what it is..."
you mean an event full of high-risk behavior and foolishness that may eventually cause serious injury or even death? Go to that event and watch students who are intoxicated beyond recognition, in a crowd that is way too big for the space, and tell me there's no potential for someone to drown or be seriously injured. Tradition or not, it needs to change or go away. The price tag for the clean-up is just another reason for that to be the case.

Also to compare, President Gee's bonus was $334,000 and his total compensation $2,150,000. I wish the university would embrace this tradition for what it is rather than trying to discourage it.

This is a very weak argument about the cost of repair because the repairs were carried out by OSU personnel that (presumably) would have to be paid no matter what they were doing. They were not outside contractors that OSU had to hire and pay with new cash.

It is a tradition Dave: deal with it

$20k in repairing grass?!? Who is planting the seed, President Gee? I think OSU needs to find new landscaper.
