Michael Nodianos is no longer an official Buckeye.

The Steubenville High School graduate with a role in a video at the heart of an alleged rape case in Steubenville, Ohio, is “no longer a student at The Ohio State University,” according to the school’s Facebook and Twitter pages Monday.

OSU spokeswoman Gayle Saunders confirmed to The Lantern Nodianos was no longer enrolled, but would not disclose the terms of his leave, citing Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations.

OSU released a statement Friday that said “the student in question was in attendance only through Dec. 12,” the last day of the university’s final examinations. Saunders reiterated that statement to The Lantern Sunday, as well.
“Find People,” the school’s faculty, staff and student directory, showed Thursday that Nodianos was a student in electrical and computer engineering.

Nodianos, who has not been charged criminally, did not respond to The Lantern’s request for comment.

Nodianos’ involvement in the Steubenville case, a town of about 18,000 along the Ohio River, has pulled OSU into a situation that’s increasingly garnered national attention in recent weeks.

The video taken from an August night of back-to-school parties where, allegedly, 16-year-old Steubenville High School football players Ma’lik Richmond and Trent Mays raped a 16-year-old girl, shows him talking and laughing about the alleged rape for more than 12 minutes.

Some found the video so offensive that it prompted a Facebook group titled, “OSU expel Michael Nodianos ‘Rape Crew’ member,” which amassed about 3,000 “likes” by Monday evening.

The video itself, which can be found on YouTube under various names, shows Nodianos, wearing an OSU T-shirt, talking and laughing about the alleged incident.

Nodianos makes several analogies that the alleged victim was “deader than” or was “raped harder than” as most voices off-camera laugh at his comments. Some rebuke him for his choice of words.

Nodianos is reportedly being represented by Dennis McNamara. The attorney, according to multiple sources, held a press conference with members of the media in Steubenville Monday. He did not immediately respond to The Lantern’s request for comment.

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, McNamara said, “there was no excuse or justification” for Nodianos’ comments.

The Plain Dealer wrote that Nodianos attended OSU on an academic scholarship.

McNamara, according to the paper, said his client was interviewed by Steubenville police not long after the incident and that he was elsewhere at the time of the alleged assault.

McNamara told reporters, according to the Plain Dealer, that Nodianos was “ashamed and embarrassed” at his actions in the video.

It appears, though, some OSU students are confused as to whether or not Nodianos left on his own terms. While there is no confirmation that the university kicked Nodianos out, some students seemed to carry that impression.

Samantha Arrowsmith, a second-year in psychology, applauded Nodianos’ departure from the university, but was also under the impression that the Steubenville High School graduate was forced out.

“The kid that got kicked out of Ohio State, I’m happy about that … I wouldn’t want someone here that was like that,” she said.

There is, however, no known evidence to suggest that Nodianos was expelled by OSU nor is there any formal indication that he will be charged with criminally.

“I wasn’t aware that a student here had been involved at all … If he hasn’t officially been arrested or charged with anything, it might be a little premature for them to permanently expel because I guess, innocent until charged or proven guilty,” said Nathan Cotton, a first-year in public affairs.

According to The New York Times, Richmond and Mays are under house arrest and awaiting a trial that has been set for Feb. 13.

As an alumna and former staff member of OSU, I am sorry to see the school associated with this sordid mess. Furthermore, it doesn't matter to me that Nodianos is embarrassed. What matters to me is that he was a part of proliferating attitudes that damage women. All women on and around campus are in jeopardy because of what these boys think is entertaining. Now that his name his known, Nodianos has someone to tell him what to say publicly, but I'd be very surprised if he and the others who were NOT named have changed much in their thinking. They think they are men because they have the parts, but they are really selfish, entitled little boys. They need eyes on them at all times.

How can OSU justify his scholarship after this? This kid is so despicable.

The fact that Michael Nodianos is wearing an OSU t-shirt in the video while objectifying and ridiculing this inebriated underage girl is the icing on the cake. He might have earned an academic scholarship but what he finds humorous and appropriate is seriously corrupt. And seriously NOT FUNNY. Who will ever date this creep? What an embarrassment he is to his family, community, school.

As an OSU alum I would be embarrassed - no, ashamed - if OSU maintained his scholarship next year or in any future year. Behavior like this is unbecoming and should not be rewarded. If it is, I will reward OSU by withdrawing any and all future support ... financial or otherwise.

Why doesn't someone at OSU, definitely NOT recognized by USNews rankings for its academic eliteneness! (ONLY Ohio ranked school is CASE)..., yes someone at taxpayer financed academically weak, but better than OhioU and YoungstownU, Ohio State: ask DeWine and OhioNOW pres Hillyer why: 1)2012 defeated candidate for USHouse [OH-6 = Steubenville] was the incumbent defeated in 2010 mortician Charlie Wilson (one of Obama's "I didn't earn it, I inherited it from gramps Howard Wilson") is a court documented wife abuser who sent his (ex)wife to the local ER in Appalachia Martins Ferry, Ohio, yet despite the fact that the (ex)wife admitted at the ER that her physical injuries were Charlie inflicted, Charlie was charged with no crime and continued his (failed) political aspirations; 2)elderly (70s) penultimate women's libber Nancy Pelosi donated $8-10K from her personal PAC to Charlie in his losing 2012 USHouse [OH-6] campaign, and the DCCC.org (democratic campaign committee headed by Isreal of New York) gave court documented wife abuser Charlie $1M! Details: google "Charlie Wilson wife abuse". Ohio and the (dying/dilapidated) Appalachia Steubenville rape are corrupt and ethically horrifying. Where education and integrity at taxpayer financed OSU?

STEUBENVILLE awarded 150 SCHOLARSHIPS in May 2012, many RAPE CREW members received multiple scholarships. I for one would not want my child in the same environment with people who have the character of a Nodianos nor any of his cohorts that were involved in the rape on Aug 11/12, 2012. Thank God for the actions of Ohio Now and Jacqueline Hillyer who isisiting that AG DeWine does the job that he has sworn to and hold him to the words he spoke 'If there's evidence to prosecute someone, we'll do it.' And please let's not stop with Nodianos...many participants/witnesses of the rape are now in college and more rapists are about to receive their SCHOLARSHIPS and go off to college. It frightens me these people will be coaches, teachers and community leaders in less than 10 years. How can they get away with this crime? Why would Malik Richmond and Trent Mays take the blame for something they did not do alone? Well, their futures are now bleak but they should take joy in knowing their fellow RAPE CREW members will go off to have great and wonderful lives thanks to their silence. GOD FORBID.

Why do we throw scholarship money at these knuckle heads? Does having a 150 iq and 4.0 get you a scholarship? No, but throwing a mean fastball or perfect spiral football 80 yards will. Something is wrong, priorities are skewed. I attended High school in the late 60's. It's the same culture then as now. The bone head football players were the bullies and got passes for bad behavior and were pampered by the teachers especially the ones that doubled as football coaches. Our star quarterback got a college scholarship. He got kicked out his sophomore year and lost his scholarship for questionable incident with the Deans daughter. He was involved in a high speed accident right after that and he's been pushing up daisies the past 30 years. Scholarship money well spent, not! Pull this losers scholarship and give it to a person that deserves it for academic accomplishments,m not for the number of rushing yards, touchdown passes, or an era.

I want to hear that Ohio State has taken away his scholarship. His behavior should not be rewarded. Even though he did not rape the girl, it appears that he was at the parties and witnessed the acts and did nothing to stop them. Even if he wasn't a witness, his behavior should be enough to have his scholarships taken away. Does OSU really want to give a scholarship to this type of person? You'd think they're at least drop him to cover their own asses.

Take back the scholarship, remove him from classes, and let us all know that you've done so. The people want to know that OSU is doing something in response.

This young man may not have directly raped this girl, but what he does on his 12 minute video is just as disgusting and foul as the rapes were. It is the mindset of Steubenville residents and it's law enforcement, is that sports is revered, and the girls are at fault for what happens to them. The coach of their team made comments that prove that he will never acknowledge that they players were wrong. He even threatened the life of the reporters and their families! What example is that, for these young men? They were drinking and partying, and should be held accountable! There have been accounts, that the girl was given the date rape drug, before she even got to the first party. Irregardless if she was drugged or if she was too drunk, what they did was WRONG and ILLEGAL! This case needs to be taken over by the State or Feds, so that this girl stands a chance. The young man in this article, he needs to be judged by his own video words. May every employer and potential girlfriend and her parents, see this young man's own words, and judge for themselves!

Glad he's no longer here, but it's not like OSU was acting as a great moral arbiter here, his attorney said he elected not to return this semester. Could have had his schollie revoked or something like that, but OSU didn't expel him... though they seem happy to give people that impression.

I hope this loser pays dearly for what he did to that girl. She's never going to get over that. A guilty conscience isn't enough, and if you think it is, you're a swine and you're only perpetuating the idea that rape is okay in society. You are just as bad as the rapist if you don't think he should be charged for this crime.

I've heard sources say that they don't want to charge the players because it will make their team look bad. You know what will make your team look bad? Letting them get away with crimes. You know what will make your team look good? Making the members of your team be held accountable for the actions they take.

This entire scenario is gross and I'm very disappointed. I'm glad to know that as a woman, my rights aren't as important as some football team. (And people say we don't need feminism.)

As a mother of daughters (one a Buckeye alum) I don't think the school should boot him. I have a feeling a guilty conscience, fellow students, friends and fam etc will do the trick. To the person who posted "Do you want your daughters at this school?" My child told me stories of how the male athletes treated the "slutty groupie" girls at the school and I begged her NOT to attend parties or end up drunk with these animals!! Oh by the way she LOVED her time at Osu (I'm a vet so I kept my foot on her throat when I heard stories of ignorant behavior!!!) hahaha

Both my mother and my grandfather graduated from Ohio State. Both were very proud of Ohio and and their school. I don't think either would be today. If Steubenville cannot own it's own climate of tolerance for these crimes then no town should play against this team. . All towns should refuse to play them in any sport boys or girls; basketball, track, baseball debate whatever. Their attitude has no place in American sports or otherwise. No talent scouts should make any appearance there. It is a miracle that this girl was not killed. This town should be shunned, and all trophys acquired this year should be taken back and given to more deserving sports minded communities. By the way whatever happened to the use of drugs and alcohol as a reason to withhold eligibility to participate in sports.
