Delta Sigma Theta’s chapter at Ohio State has been suspended until at least Fall Semester of 2016 for violating the Code of Student Conduct .

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. sisters nationwide celebrated the centennial anniversary of their sisterhood’s existence that began at Howard University in Washington, D.C.

However, members of the Epsilon chapter at Ohio State  might have experienced a gloomier day, as their chapter was recently suspended on alleged violations of hazing.

“Delta Sigma Theta’s chapter at The Ohio State University has been suspended until at least Fall Semester of 2016. The Ohio State University Code of Student Conduct prohibits hazing, and there are consequences for violating those rules,” said Dave Isaacs, Student Life spokesman, in a Monday email to The Lantern.
The Lantern also contacted Sharrell L. Hassell-Goodman, assistant director of Sorority and Fraternity Life, and Antonio-Phillip Lytle, coordinator of Greek Affairs in the Ohio Union, however both redirected questions to Isaacs.

Delta Sigma Theta is an international organization overseen by the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Incorporated (NPHC) based out of Atlanta, Ga.

In Article III of NPHC’s OSU constitution and bylaws, it states that keeping membership in the organization includes “being in good standing with the University as indicated in the OSU Student Conduct and the Greek Life Task Force.”

Delta Sigma Theta also has a detailed anti-hazing policy on its website, which states, “All acts of hazing or harassment, both physical and mental, shall be expressly prohibited.”

Representatives of Delta Sigma Theta’s Midwest region referred The Lantern to the National Headquarters for any comments on the probation.

“Unfortunately, we cannot share any information regarding the chapter’s disciplinary action,” said Deirdre Shoulars, membership director, in an email.

Neither the president of Delta Sigma Theta’s Epsilon chapter nor the executive director responded for comment. Four other members also did not respond for comment.

Other students involved in Greek life at OSU said they are opposed to hazing and do not like the stigma it gives their organizations.

“I have a negative view of hazing,” said Joshua Glocer, a fourth-year in political science and member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. “And that goes for the university as well because then it is endangering students. They don’t want to endanger students, they want to continue to promote Greek life in the most positive light possible because of all the benefits that it has to the school.”

The Delta Sigma Theta, Epsilon chapter will stay on suspension until at least Fall Semester 2016. The process of returning to campus will not be an easy one. Isaacs told The Lantern that its national organization will have to petition to the Student Life’s Department of Student Conduct and the Ohio Union’s Sorority and Fraternity Life.

“The petition must include a comprehensive plan for member recruitment and introduction into the sorority (i.e. new member period.) Student Conduct and Sorority and Fraternity Life representatives will evaluate the petition to determine if it is satisfactory and sufficiently addresses concerns,” Isaacs said in the email. “Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. may seek assistance from Student Conduct and Sorority and Fraternity Life in developing such a plan.”

Quit being babies, bigger issues to tackle then shutting down this chapter for "mental" hazing of these girls. Do you want a band aid for your bleeding heart?

Honestly, Sankofa and everyone else ripping apart this article, you seriously need to work on your reading comprehension skills. This is not an allegation. This is not even a report on allegations. This is a report on the SUSPENSION of the chapter, which already took place. This is not alleged misdeeds. These ARE misdeeds that they are being punished for. Guilt AND sentencing has already been established. Just because the details of the violations are sealed does not mean there are none. I know you're hurt because this is something you love, but don't twist the facts. Fact is, violations occurred and now they are paying the price.

The Delta's at OSU deserved it... Their alunmai were pretty brutal towards Kappa chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha when their chapter was suspended in 2005. They will comeback and haze again just like a majority of black greeks and I will laugh once again if they get caught. The Aka's are the the only active black Greeks at OSU who do not partake in this activity. Zeta chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, Kappa chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, Omega Psi Phi all are still undergoing "pledging."

BGLO are supposed to do community service. It's not a social event, nor is it newsworthy. No excuses should be made. They should simply do better. All Deltas are better than the mentally & physically abused ones coming out of Epsilon chapter. Any Black student at OSU knows hazing has been going on for years in this chapter. Let's not act like now that they are simply being exposed they are undeserving of their punishment. Hopefully in 2016, they will not discriminate against girls with health issues.

You can't speak to the press or give out any information on it while its under investigation. That's why there arent any details and it say so in the article.

Sorors we've got to do better! This is absolutely atrocious and embarrassing to our beloved sisterhood especially since this is our CENTENNIAL YEAR! I pray that you all truly learn from this and realize what's important in DELTA. It's not "making" girls into what we feel a Delta should be, but it is instilling in the young ladies the rich history of our beloved organization and the true value and meaning of sisterhood, scholarship and service!

To all those attacking the author of this article, please relax...she is simply dealing with the information she has at hand, the DETAILS of the incident are not being reported because the Sorority does not want them to be, however they did NOT deny that it involved hazing. There are some things she could have done better while writing this article but don't criticize her because you're upset that Epsilon was caught hazing...let's be real, wrong is wrong!

Hazing is bad but not as bad as this article. Hailey Fairchild please tell me this is a hobby and not a career. Who is Joshua Glocer and how is he affiliated with DST? This article is just horrendous. I'm against hazing and all, but give out the dets if you're going to put someone on blast! The lack of details and facts makes me surmise the organization is innocent. You can get suspended for looking at someone wrong or just about anything these days.

You cannot believe everything you see on TV, nor everything inexperienced college students write in the Lantern. This story has no substance and says little to nothing on what happened or what the hazing allegations were. At least let the story develop before getting quotes from random fraternities, that are not even apart of the NPHC. I would respect this article so much more if some thought (or research for that matter) was put into it.

It is unfortunate that my suspended soror's of Epsilon Chapter (OSU) have been getting away with this. I became apart of this dynamic sorority in the 80's. Our sorority has banded hazing years ago. It is unfortunate that this chapter will lose out on great students at OSU that could have contribute to the 100 year legacy of sisterhood and service at this great institution. The 100 year celebration last week in D.C. re-dedication, reinforced the true purpose and goals of the long legacy of love, sisterhood and service. I pray that the chapter becomes re-established at the appropriate time.

So saddened to see this at such a joyous time for the sorority (100 yr centennial). I was never accepted into the distinguished group and knew this was a reality if I wanted to join. The desire to "belong" was so strong that I would have conformed to the vicious acts I may have been subjected to. I hope the status of this sorority is not tarnished on campus for years to come. Prayers to the ladies whom were hazed.

The Lantern didn't report all the "service, blah, blah, blah, since 1919" because that's what you're expected to do just like every other greek organization. But instead you GOT CAUGHT HAZING and will not exist at OSU until 2016+. I'd say that's more newsworthy than whatever you're talking about.

The person who even has the audacity to bring up penn State sounds ignorant, hope you're not college educated. This is such a general article that you have no idea what these allegations are and whether theyre true. & i'm pretty sure it's nothing in comparison to that situation anyway

The Lantern probably doesn't report on people doing community service and all that other crap because that isn't news.

To the poster who is upset they ignored all the good stuff... So Penn State is all good because they were nice people for a long time... that should help balance out the bad? Give me a break. It takes a lot to get a sorority suspended... especially for this long. You know that the hazing had to be pretty bad.

Thanks for reporting on this. As a 2nd Year who is wary of fraternities and sororities because of hazing, I am glad that I know yet another sorority to avoid. From this viewpoint, if I do join a fraternity/sorority, it'll probably be an academic one.

This is an unfortunate event for the Great Women of Epislon Chapter and of Delta Sigma Theta. This organiization has contributed countless effort hours to the uplifting of your community and it will be great lost during their absence. To all my sorors keep your head up much Love - Roo Team

Getting suspended days after celebrating your centennial is a slap in the face to your founders, charter members, and all your sorority sisters who came before you. These young ladies should be deeply embarrassed.

Its amazing how the Lantern would be the first to report the negative, but all the community service, programs, & events they hosted on campus since 1919!!!! never made it to the news. Of course "allegations" do. Great job promoting the work of tuition paying students on campus. smh
