Ohio State football player Jaamal Berry has been named a suspect in an alleged assault that occurred Friday morning, according to a report from the Columbus Police Department. It is the second incident involving Berry allegedly assaulting another individual in less than a month.

The latest incident occurred at 2:20 a.m. Friday on Vine Street, behind North Market, and involved a 21-year-old non-OSU student. The victim was "struck in the face with a closed fist," according to the Columbus police report.

Berry, a redshirt sophomore running back, was with another African-American male and was allegedly yelling at the victim and his friend, after the victim was struck by a car. The victim, who The Lantern has chosen not to name at this time, said that Berry and his friend were yelling vulgar remarks at him. After asking why they were yelling, the victim said that Berry crossed the street and punched his friend, and then punched him in the face with a closed fist.

Berry was later identified by a witness, and the alleged victim said he confirmed Berry's identity when shown a picture by police.

The victim's mother, who requested anonymity, said she spoke with Gene Smith, OSU athletic director, about the incident on Friday afternoon.

Smith said that the athletic department is aware that Berry might have been involved in an altercation.

"We have not been informed by anyone else that charges have been filed," Smith told The Lantern Monday. "If Jaamal is charged, he will be suspended pending the outcome of the case."

Berry and other witnesses involved did not immediately respond to The Lantern's requests for comment.

On Sept. 28, Berry was involved in what an OSU police report described as an "assault" on another student. Berry was admitted and released from the OSU Medical Center and no charges were filed.

WOW! So the coach says "they are waiting for criminal charges" isn't a civil suit and more than 3 witnesses enough to suspend Jaamal Berry? More people have identified Berry as the person that made the assault. Fickell says "we take everything we do seriously, on the field and off the field, NOTHING GOES UNNOTICED" well this assault was off the field and more than a couple of witnesses. What is OSU waiting for? NOTHING GOES UNNOTICED, but maybe ignored?

Just saying.....watch this video on channel 6: www.abc6onyourside.com/shared/newsroom/top_stories/videos/wsyx_vid_14235.shtml

TO DREW K:
Apparently you have not done your research? It's not just the victim that made the statement, it's several witnesses that confirmed the victim's story. I just watched the news and Jaamal is being sued for this. Jaamal was just guilty of a similiar incident on campus Sept 29, does he have an anger issue? An innocent person walking down the street confirms the victim's story so they say in the news and on multiple web site. Why would someone at random confirm the story? Why would someone that just got hit by a car try to pick a fight with two other guys? No one deserves to be punched in their face or any other part of their body, sounds like you deserve it if you are siding with Jaamal, research his past and maybe you will agree that no one deserves assault. Obviously it was a random guy, so boohoo on you for being so wrong with your comments. You are right, until someone is proven guilty...well Jaamal was proven guilty in sept when he punched the student on campus when he didn't even know where he was at the time and apparenlty guilty on this incident considering several witnesses. Maybe Jaamal needs anger management help and any other help that will help him to control his anger and help him to remember when he fights someone!

He "doesn't get it about being a Buckeye"? Apparently cognitive sisal ace reigns supreme in Buckeye Nation. Perhaps you haven't been paying attention to the antics, shenanigans, bribes, and assaults that are ingrained in OSU culture. It is easily argued that he understands exactly what it means to be a Buckeye. Tattooed, choking felons.

What ever happened to innocent until proven guilty? Why should the University punish this man for something he is being accused of? All of you sit here and criticize this guy for being from a bad neighborhood, but if you ask me he is the one trying to better himself by getting out of those neighborhoods. It's very easy to sit there and judge somebody from behind a computer, thinking that you are the model citizen. When the fact of the matter is every single one of you have broken some law or commited some crime atleast once in your life. Also, to the person that stated "I'm Not sure where you got info that the victim was drunk? The victim obviously gave a statement to the police department and if they thought he was guilty of being drunk or guilty of disorderly conduct, they would have arrested him." Why else would you be at a bar 2:20 AM? And to the person that said "Step One: Bed Checks. No student athlete should be out behind a bar at 2:20 in the morning." When did America become Soviet Russia? What gives you the right to tell someone because they play a collegiate sport that they are not allowed to go out past a certain time or go have a few beers. It seems to me that everybody commenting on this article is a hypocrite. BooHoo he punched someone in the face, odds are that person deserved it. In all reality there is no such thing as an innocent victim, everybody is guilty of something. I am willing to bet he didn't just see some random guy walking down the street and decide to punch him in the face. That is if he even did it.

To the person that wrote, "maybe the guy deserved to get punched. sometimes drunks say stupid things. I'm just saying..." I'm Not sure where you got info that the victim was drunk? The victim obviously gave a statement to the police department and if they thought he was guilty of being drunk or guilty of disorderly conduct, they would have arrested him. No one deserves to be assaulted. This story sickens me. Jaamal was just arrested for the same crime 3 weeks ago. I am concerned what kind of role models these OSU players are reflecting on our small children. Not a good example of good "sportsmanship" and definitely not a good example of how OSU disciplined him for the last incident, I am shocked they have not suspended him for this pending the investigation....but wait...there is a big game this weekend so that won't happen!

I'm pretty sure punching somebody in the face is a more serious rule violation than speeding. Especially when it's the second assault you've committed in a month

Is Smith calling his mother to offer free tattoos in lieu of pressing charges, I'm sure it wasn't concern for the assaulted man? Is Gene Smith calling victims of every assault victim in the city now? Or did he abuse power and illegally through other state agencies get this mans mothers phone number? Us taxpayers cant do that, how does he get away with it?

I see all of this preaching about following rules and so on, I drive on 315 with most of you law breakers! A speed limit is a simple law/rule that VERY VERY few of you follow! Lets put everybody under the microscope and see how many comments get posted? We ALL break the law/rules nothing is perfect in this universe so please stop preaching. If you still feel compelled to preach, try teaching morals and values. this is a reflection of society not OSU! Monkey see monkey do

Seroiusly, are some of these OSU players mentally disabled?? It just boggles the mind that these players are STILL knowingly breaking the SIMPLIST of rules. I can only think it's the self-absorbed, narcissistic, selfish, mindset that kids have now. I mean, elementary children have more self discipline than these OSU players!! Unbelievable...

I know thugs can be good football players, but the damage they do to the University's rep is not worth their skills on the field. Get rid of this criminal
