OSU graduates walk into Ohio Stadium to begin OSU's 400th commencement ceremony June 10, 2012

Some graduating Ohio State students are speaking out against the university’s decision to limit guests for the Spring Commencement ceremony on May 5, and trying to secure extra seats through other methods.

The decision to have a maximum number of four guests per student was cited as a security measure for President Barack Obama, who was announced as the spring commencement speaker Wednesday.

Board of Trustees Secretary David Horn, who served on the Commencement Speaker Selection Committee, said the renovations on the concrete in Ohio Stadium also contributed to the ticket limit.

“I was flustered,” said Joshua Glocer, a fourth-year in global science. “It’s nerve-wracking to tell people that you care about, and that care about you, that you only have four tickets.”

Guests will need a ticket to attend the ceremony, but graduates will not. Students will be able to receive up to four tickets with a photo ID.

“It sucks because I already have six people coming from Los Angeles where I’m from and they already bought their plane tickets. It’s going to be hard to tell two people that they can’t come,” Glocer said.

Katherine Grimm, a fourth-year in psychology and human resources, had previously invited about 10 to 15 people to attend her graduation at Ohio Stadium.

“I’m kind of ticked just because we have a big enough venue for students to bring as many guests as (they would) like to see them graduate, and I think that’s something Ohio State students are privileged to have. If we have that ability we should be able to use it,” Grimm said.

OSU is anticipating its largest graduating class to date with an estimated 12,000 graduates, said Amy Murray, a university spokeswoman.

“We generally do not ask our guests to have tickets, but we will this time,” Murray said. “We’re also dealing with the largest graduating class ever. It’s going to be bigger than it’s ever been, even bigger than last year, which was also the largest graduating class ever. They keep getting larger.”

With an estimated 12,000 graduates, and an additional 48,000 guests if each graduate brings four guests, Eric Mayer, a fourth-year in sport industry, said the numbers don’t add up given the stadium capacity of more than 100,000 people.

“I understand the president is coming and it’s important to protect his safety,” Mayer said. “But I think they could still do it.”

Mayer said he was “not pleased” that only about half of the stadium will be used, and other students agreed.

“I don’t see the logic in how they can’t expand. It doesn’t make sense because it’s just a numbers game,” Glocer said.

Some students are considering buying tickets from eligible graduates who will not be participating in the ceremony or do not have four guests attending. The Ohio State University Class of 2013 Facebook page already lists people looking to buy tickets and others offering theirs to the highest bidder.

“If I could get my hands on more tickets, it would be great but everyone will be trying to get them,” Grimm said. “I don’t want to put my family in a position to pay a ton of money to see me graduate.”

Mayer also said he would be interested in buying tickets for the ceremony.

“I’m hoping to pull some strings,” he said.

However, students said they are still excited for the opportunity to hear Obama speak at commencement.

“To be able to have the president of the United States come and speak at our graduation is very special, especially being that he is the first African-American president we’ve ever had, and our school celebrates diversity,” Mayer said.

Glocer, who attended Obama’s inauguration in 2009, also said he was excited.

“I think it truly is a remarkable event, I can’t wait to be a part of it,” Glocer said.

Grimm said she wished OSU would have selected a speaker that every graduate could enjoy, regardless of political views.

“It’s a big deal to have the president speak at your grad(uation) even if you don’t like him,” Grimm said. “But as much as I’m excited, I wish OSU would have picked a politically neutral person to speak. He’s been to Ohio State seven or eight times in the past year and everyone’s gotten their dose of him.”

Obama has been to campus five times in the past three years and kicked off his re-election campaign at the Schottenstein Center on May 5, 2012, exactly a year before he is expected to be at graduation.

Allison Bourg graduated from OSU in 2002 with a degree in journalism when former President George W. Bush was the commencement speaker. This was the last time the sitting president spoke at an OSU commencement. There was not a ticket limit then, and Bourg received about 10 tickets for her guests, but security was still a concern.

“I mainly remember definitely seeing snipers around the stadium area. My family had come out from west Pennsylvania to see the ceremony, and they had to go through long security lines. It was similar to what you see at airports. They were checking all of us,” she said.

State facts about a political figure, and right away it's politicizing. If Gordon Gee is willing to collect all these discussions and send them to Obama and ask, "What do you think?", and Obama responds, "I understand completely. I'll back out because the day is really for the graduates and their families", then I'll stand corrected.

I'm not a die hard fan of Obama, but seriously, did you absolutely have to politicize it?

I don't expect Obama to care when he's not above using his own daughters as political props. The real blame is with Gordon Gee for inviting him. As for the "deal with it" crowd, there are always those with all the answers when they're on the threshold of graduation. But then some of them grow up and have families of their own. If their kid's graduation is ever hijacked like this, we'll see how well they "deal with it".

as a parent who has spent a ton of money on sending my child to Ohio State should not have to
DEAL WITH IT!!! We're not crying about it being obama or anyone else, its the amount of tickets available for a stadium this size. With a record setting graduating class and construction in the stadium why did OSU select such a high profile speaker. The kids were not considered in this "popular vote" selection. Why should our families suffer to make room for secret service and the rest of the entourage. The whole package: traffic shut downs for his motorcade, close parking limited to accomodate presidential vehicles, the long lines to get into the stadium and surrounding campus areas, searches of our personal items, the whole experience. The kicker is probably having to provide an ID with your ticket to get in .. LOL something we don't need to do at the voting polls

I'm going to graduate and just told my family that there was a ticket limit. My grandma is thrilled that she doesn't have to sit through a ceremony just to see me get a piece of paper. So, maybe instead of talking about how much you want your extended family with you, you should just look on the bright side- maybe they don't want to sit through it in the first place.

the fact of the matter is this stadium holds over 100,000 on game day... how many sections will be closed for construction? If every student walks, 12000 x 4 = 48000. where are the other seats?

And I hope to God that any extra tickets will be give to those graduates who need extras for family that have earned the right to be there and not handed out to the general public with no ties to graduation that only want to see the president speak. Imagine all the secret service taking away from a momentous day for these kids.... completely wrong choice for speaker.

Look at it this way. Every graduate in attendance gets to put on their resume that they worked for the secret service as a security screener. Granted it'll only be for a day, they won't get paid, and it won't be their choice. But one can't have everything.

Niraj Antani, senior counselor to USG, wants to work with OSU officials to "eliminate the ticket limit" (Dispatch). Future DC politician right there. Proposing solutions that sound good but after a little critical thinking actually don't make much sense at all. Yes, let's let 500,000 people into the Shoe. Do people even think anymore?

Could care less who the commencement speaker is. If I were a parent of a son or daughter that is graduating this year and we were told that only four guests could attend, I would be furious. Thankfully my son will not be graduating until next spring. Afterall, the tens of thousands of $$$ I have invested (not to mention all the loans he will be paying off for the next 10+ years) in my kid's education & future and our wonderful university pulls this moronic stunt. Four ticket limit is a joke. tOSU screwed-up big time on this one.

Why should students that didnt vote for Obama and their families be penalized by not being able to attend graduation.

This makes me very sad for the graduates that can't share this special moment with their family and friends. This president has been to other college graduations and there weren't restrictions for sitting at them. Why at Ohio State? The more I think about this the less i want to donate money to the Ohio State

I have returned to school after more than 20 years and I am finally finishing my degree. My children and spouse will be able to attend, but I am very frustrated and disappointed that my parents and siblings will not be able to share this exciting time with me. They were so excited about attending my graduation. I am very disappointed with OSU. It appears that the school executives and administrators place more emphasis on ensuring that football game attendees are accommodated more than attendees supporting academic accomplishment.

Obama has absolutely nothing to do with this aside from being used as an excuse to deflect criticism away from those who made this decision. I can understand a ticket limit but 4 is ridiculously low. Parents, possible step-parents, siblings, significant others, life-long friends, how are four tickets supposed to be enough? Commencement is the culmination of years of hard work, financial and emotional commitment of not only the graduate but also his or her family who should all be allowed to attend.

Who in the world was involved in making that ridiculous decision??? Obama didnt restrict the number of people that came to listen to him when he was campaigning so why should it be any different. Ever since Les Wexner retired from service at Ohio State- the people making major decision at Ohio State are floundering. The students and their families are what is important not the 5 minutes speech of a controversial sitting president.

I did vote for Obama, and I agree with Katherine that yes, while it is exciting to have the president here, a non political figure would have been a nice move, especially with the divided state Ohio is in.

I think using President Obama as the reason for ticket limit is a cop out. I have worked so hard the last four years to graduate on time, and I cannot have more than four family members there to celebrate. My parents are seperated, so automatically my four tickets go to them. Sorry little brother, grandma and grandpa..you can't come.

With all due respect...President Obama...you are ruining the Graduation. Please decline the invitation so our families can attend. You won't be the most important person there, those people will be standing outside looking in. This isn't your day, it is ours and we want our families, not you. Please, please don't come. If you want to give a speech, tape it and play it and we can all enjoy it knowing moments later our families will see us graduate...win/win.

They should sell the tickets following the simple supply and demand principle of our market
