President Barack Obama announced to the nation and to the world Sunday night that Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks, is dead. Students at Ohio State abandoned their studies, sleep and law-abiding ways to celebrate.

Obama announced at about 11:30 p.m. that the U.S. had located bin Laden and killed him in a CIA-conducted operation in Abbottabad, Pakistan, 30 miles outside of Islamabad.

"Tonight, I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaida, and a terrorist who's responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women and children," Obama said in his address to the nation.

After an almost 10-year manhunt for bin Laden, the U.S. now has possession of his body.

"America can do whatever we set our mind to," Obama said. "That is the story of our history."

OSU students quickly began to celebrate.

John Bischoff, a third-year in hospitality management, said he was sacrificing study time to celebrate with his fellow Buckeyes.

"I mean, I've got a three-page paper due in about six hours, and I'm here. I mean, why not? America, f--- yeah," Bischoff said.

Hundreds of students joined Bischoff to share their excitement in Obama's announcement. Fireworks were visible from all around campus, students jumped into Mirror Lake and general patriotic celebration commenced. Students at Mirror Lake chanted "USA" and sang "God Bless America," "The Star Spangled Banner" and various other patriotic chanting.

The OSU Police Department was also on the scene monitoring the activities. Police seemed to be restricting access to the lake at about 2 a.m.

"That was the whole idea, to keep the peace," said sergeant Marc Dopp of the Columbus Police Department. Dopp said there were no incidents to report.

USG president Micah Kamrass was one of the hundreds of students who jumped in Mirror Lake.

"I think it's a great day for Ohio State and for all Americans and the way we celebrate is to jump into Mirror Lake," Kamrass said. "(Jumping in Mirror Lake) shows that we care so much about our country. We have a lot of students here who were directly impacted by the attacks of Sept. 11. Everyone in here was impacted in some way so I think it shows that we care about our country and those around us."

Not all students agreed with the actions of the students in Mirror Lake. Lauren Decker, a third-year in international studies, did not participate in the celebration.

"This is not the Buckeyes winning the National Championship. This is bigger and more important. This is the murder without trial of the head of an international terrorist organization," Decker said. "Why are people jumping in Mirror Lake? President Obama did not step out for his address shooting off confetti cannons. This is not over."

Obama said no Americans were killed and those involved took care to avoid casualties.

"We can do these things not just because of wealth or power, but because of who we are," Obama said. "We must remain vigilant at home and abroad."

The only person on here with any sense is Mark. The sun sets on every empire. One love Mark. And also, these kids, were they a part of the mission to kill Bin Laden - would they have been capable of killing? Nah, probably not. Probably why they're in college, most likely wasting their time and money on a liberal arts degree, celebrating the achievements of others. Party on.

I didn't realize how much 9/11 had affected the college-age generation until seeing Sunday's celebrations. Thinking about it, most of these kids were in middle school in 2001, a time when most of us have an innocent optimism about life and the world we live in, and I can only imagine how 9/11 would have affected me at that age. Frankly, although I am skeptical of our country's position in the world and think that we probably still have hell to pay for all of the innocent lives our government has taken since 9/11, I think that the celebrations were moving and beautiful and give me much hope for the future of this country. Just avoid becoming kooky Republicans, kids!

it is unbelievable that people of this country cannot celebrate the death of a murderer. he killed thousands of people, not just americans. We should all be throwing a freakin parade for this. But america has to be the only country who would go against it's own people like that. it is so annoying that on a day that should be enjoyed by everyone in this country, people like you are criticizing these college kids for showing patriotism. yes, a death is a death... but it's the death of a terrorist. someone who killed INNOCENT people while they worked. Maybe he should have had a trial, but that's an american right.. not his. Osama killed innocent people because of what their government did. no one on 9/11 deserved to die bc of what our government has done, but he didn't care. so why should we? i love this country, but i can't stand people like you in it.

I wish I couldve joined in on the celebration but I have real issues to deal with. For one I've had a hell of a time getting a job no thanks to some stupid decisions I made as a sophomore. But still the biggest no thanks goes to the campus terrorists, i.e. the OSU Police. Who's going to save us from them because in my honest opinion they certainly don't protect and serve, just harrass and charge and ruin our lives if we come in conact with them.
Prospective employees see this on my record even in spite of my good GPA and dont want to hire me. Not trying to get too much off topic but it pisses me off still and it's why I find no solace in jumping in a lake right about now.

Thomas, would you prefer they burned couches like they did at Morgantown?

How stupid. As an alum I'm ashamed. Other colleges and universities celebrated but we were the only ones to jump in a cool pond half naked. Like a scene out of the movie "Animal House." What are we really celebrating?

As a Class of '82 alum, I feel I should add my two cents for what it's worth. Im all for jumping in Mirror Lake on the Thursday before The Game because that's tradition. Jumping in Mirror Lake because the government killed a terrorist seems a bit immature, which is why I wouldn't be surprised if alcohol was involved... We are talking about college students, after all!

But any way, I can't be too critical because back in '79, during the Iranian hostage crisis, tens thousands of students surrounded some "Iranian-looking" students at University Hall and the situation got way out of control, though no one was hurt. That same day, hundreds of students carried an "Iranian-looking" students expensive American Corvette parked by the Main Library and dumped it in Mirror Lake. While they may have the best of intensions, college students dont always think things throughespecially when their acting as a mob!

With regard to bin Ladens so-called "murder," it wasnt murder without a trial; rather he was inadvertently killed incidental to his arrest. Since none of us were present, well just have to accept the reports. For the record, bin Ladens 2900 victims did not receive a trial, either!

Although its hard to ignore that people seem to forget that the US has a long history of "bringing to justice" to the very terrorists it funded in the first place. over ten years of an oil war and you think THIS is a victory? maybe we as a people truly are too far gone in our ignorance, but maybe not. I can see both the patriotic views and the skeptical opinions of everyone- but I feel thats exactly why we should be grateful, because WE HAVE TO OPPORTUNITY to agree or not to agree or to be skeptical and voice our opinions. I think this celebration was less for the killing of a man but the fact that our TROOPS are there protecting us and risking their lives for our freedom. OSU loves the troops, and I am sure they loved the fact that Americans were excited and ecstatic for them- they want to feel SUPPORTED. thats what mirror lake was for, a celebration- and I am sure when the war comes to an end the celebration here will be more epic than ever.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
--First Amendment

Isn't this really what being American comes down to? Both sides have every right to express their opinions, absolutely. But instead of finding something to argue (i.e. Lauren's comment), why not respect our fellow Buckeyes and Americans? Why not respect their entitlement to their own opinions and recognize it with American virtue. Isn't that what's being fought for? Isn't it a shame that any of this had to happen?

Lauren Decker I support you and I don't think you're a terrorist! Thank you for having the guts to give such a controversial quote :).

Even Osama deserved a trial? Maye he did, maybe he didn't, but surrender was offered and he opened fire. He got his chance, but instead choose trial by a 5.56mm through the head. God bless America and God bless the men and women in uniform protecting our rights, even the rights of the damn hippies to open their uneducated and unappreciative mouths.

Sure, let her speak her mind but honestly who cares what the hell Lauren Decker thinks. I was 13-years-old and living in NYC on September 11th. I went to school 12 blocks away from WTC and NEVER have I seen my hometown so traumatized. I didn't jump into Mirror Lake last night but I was out there celebrating with the rest of them. I don't wish death upon anyone, but good riddance. Not an ounce of sympathy.

i go to ohio state and i was ashamed of all this celebration. Even osama bin laden deserved a trial... the USA just murdered him and thats not justice no matter how u spin it. Everyone celebrating calls themselves americans but they dont seem to care about democratic values. i do care about those people that lost their lives on 9/11 and i do feel for those families but revenge is never the answer. when does 2996 lives equal 1? if u believed in democratic values than under the first amendment of the constitution even osama bin laden is allowed to believe what he wants to believe and still maintains the rights that all other people have as living human beings

As so many of you are full of a nationalistic fervor, maybe you should remember that one of the founding principles of our country is freedom of speech. Without it, we're no different from the terrorist leader whose death many appear to be celebrating. Lauren is well within her rights as an American to call to our attention the reality of what happened. A true American would applaud her for speaking her mind, not call her a terrorist.

Regardless of why people were celebrating, I think many news outlets picked up on the "osama is dead lets party" aspect, which is what the rest of the world saw. I know many people were celebrating our service men and women or those that they know that have died, but unfortunately the media seemed to portray us as drunk college kids just looking for an excuse to party.
