Taylor Swift has reportedly been offered the role of Eponine in the film adaptation of ‘Les Miserables.’

Director Tom Hooper must have been dropped on his head.

When multiple media outlets reported Wednesday that Taylor Swift had beaten out Broadway veteran and "Glee" star Lea Michele for the role of Eponine in Hooper's film version of the classic musical "Les Miserables," many fans of the show met the news with outrage.

While it's hard to argue with Swift's star power, she by no means has the Broadway-caliber voice necessary for the role. Michele, on the other hand, undoubtedly has the acting and vocal chops to take the role to a new level on the big screen.

Swift, who also reportedly beat out Scarlett Johansson and Evan Rachel Wood for the part, will certainly bring with her many fans who would not have seen the movie otherwise. But Michele is a big enough star in her own right to have starred in a movie whose cast list already includes several other A-list actors. Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway will also star in the film.

A role in "Valentine's Day" and a slew of music videos hardly give Swift the acting experience needed for the role, while Michele has experience both onstage and onscreen. In fact, Michele began her acting career in the role of "Young Cosette" in the Broadway version of "Les Mis."

Wood, likewise, has proven herself, both vocally and acting-wise. Her movie credits include "Across the Universe," in which she sang beautifully, and critic darling "Thirteen."

What was Hooper thinking?

Perhaps it was Swift's likability or her large fan base which had Hooper hooked. Perhaps it was the probability that attaching Swift's name to the film will help rake in big bucks. But whatever led Hooper to this casting decision might very well lead to an uprising by musical theater fans, and as a result, perhaps the loss of a large group of the film's targeted audience. Hooper undoubtedly was counting on long-time fans of the play to see the film, but his casting decision may turn off more fans that he was expecting.

Even some of Swift's fans are ripping the decision.

One Taylor Swift and "Les Mis" fan, Katie Kendrick, told MTV that while she loves Swift's music, she's not sure Swift has the experience or the talent necessary for the role.

"I love Taylor Swift – I bought her CDs, I have everything. But I'm not sure she'll be able to hit those notes that Eponine hits in her songs," Kendrick said. "… I wish her luck, but I'm not sure she'll be able to live up to the expectations that have been set previously."

To be sure, millions of Swift's most loyal followers will more than likely flock to the theater and the film will probably do well at the box office. But that doesn't mean the film will do "Les Mis" justice or that Swift's performance will be on par with the ones Michele or Wood would have put forth.

The English translation of "Les Miserables" is "the miserable ones." While the title was not intended to refer to audience members, musical theater fans who see Swift's performance in the well-loved role may soon have to count themselves among that group.

Can you turn these "Taylor Swift Sucks" articles into a weekly column? It could serve as a public service announcement warning the public of Swift's "singing." Plus the comments sections on these articles are hilarious.

I had the misfortune of accompanying the some kids to her concert at Philips Arena in Atlanta as their mother was sick and it was the worst experience of my life! The girl cannot sing! PERIOD! She should thank her lucky stars that the kids scream like crazy and sing along to her every song and so she doesn't need to do much other than fling her hair back and forth and prance around on stage. This is the worst decision that Tom Hooper has made! She is Overrated, Overplayed, and Overexposed!

Check out { U tube} the incredible and definitive Les Miz's--- 10th and the 25 Aniv. performances by the better Lea. Lea Salonga. For her performance as Kim in Miss Saigon, 17 year old Lea Salonga won the Olivier for Best Performance by an Actress in a Musical for the 1989-1990 season. Yes a relative unproven and unknown young artist. won her first time out. But time passes and she is no longer a young woman. She has aged out and into different roles. Good thing you were not around back then to dismiss her. If Miss Swift happens to be cast, you can believe she will not fail to please first time viewers of the show. For those few of us who were fortunate enough to have seen live Broadway musicals, {It pays dividends to chaperone students to Journalism conventions in NYC} we will always favor the artists who were in them as a film can't hope to duplicate that experience. But you forget that, only a relativly few people get to see a live performance, and those wonderful artists age out, but the show and potential future fans of it keep moving on. Your repeated articles that denigrate Swift could be, by design, to get Google hits, or you are just "Mean". I hope it is the former if you hope to continue in a journalism career as a unbiased ,objective writer.

really disappointing...with what already appears to be a cast of actors, although they are highly commendable, I assumed they would give the role of Eponine to Lea Michele, who is a trained musical theatre performer. Her version of 'On My Own' is simply stunning, I cannot imagine anyone turning her down for the role after hearing, what I'm sure would have been, a flawless rendition. Whilst Swift fans can complain we are being harsh, would the tables not be turned if Swift lost out to another performer for say a role as a country singer. Swift is brave to take it on, I would have thought she would have the good grace to realise the role may be out of her depth. Very disappointing. Even if Swift does give a passable performance, I have no doubt Lea would have far succeeded her. This is coming from a fan of both Michele and Swift.

Taylor Swift is Universal Music artist. This film production is Universal Pictures. Sad things... Stage to Film always like this kind of Tragedy (except "The Producers"). "Showboat" was not starring role for great Lena Horne. "My Fair Lady" wihtout Julie Andrews. "The Wiz" without Stephanie Mills. "Evita" without Elaine Paige. "The Phantom of the Opera" without Michael Crawford and Sarah. "Hairyspray" without Harvey Firestein. "Chicago" with Bebe Neuwirth and Ann Reinking (or Chita and Gwen). "Nine" without Banderas, Mary Stuart Masterson, Jane Krakowski, Chita.... I just hope "Spring Awakening" movie version NOT without Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff. Good news is "Sunset Blvd" will perform Glenn Close (not Barbra or Meryl)....

Unfortunately, this may have been a producer's decision. It definitely sounds like someone who wants to make more money rather than make a quality product. Whether that person was Hooper or one of the three listed producers, or even a studio head, is hard to tell.

The role of Eponine obivously should have gone Lea because she would've given them the same amount of publicity, becasue all the ppl who like glee would have come (and that is alot of ppl), and she actaully has the chops to act and sing this role, in my opinion.
And i agree that the movie has been ruined before it has even started fliming by that one crappy casting descion

You're totally right. No one should be cast in a film based on their popularity in another area. This casting is almost as awful as the idea to put Justin Timberlake in The Social Network.
Wait, what? He actually did a great job? And got Oscar buzz? Huh, maybe an unproven actor can turn out a great performance in a movie!

This choice was obviously not based on talent but based on publicity. Taylor is an extremely mediocre singer.

The first sentence "Director Tom Hooper must have been dropped on his head." Should actually read "Director Tom Hooper must have been dropped on his wallet." Then you wouldn't have needed the rest of the article.

Listen, her music is catchy, but her voice is average for a pop singer (which is still better than most). She doesn't have the range or strength for Les Mis. Calling her an amazing singer and actress is hilariously misguided at best. A quality and modern film adaptation of this play should be made with people who have experience and chops, not some flash in the pan country pop floozy. Pretty obvious this was a monetary decision and not one that will be good for posterity. The good thing is that it will probably be out of theaters a week after debut to give space to the next romantic-comedy outbreak-driven robot-overlord teen coming-of-age movie.... in 3D. Spare me your "leave britney alone" sentiments.

I understand you have doubts in Taylor, but I can assure you she will put her everything into that part, and that is coming as an admirer of her work and herself. If you haven't already, watch the videos on Youtube.com where she does covers in her Speak Now Tour - those are truly breath taking and I believe that she has a lot to offer. You can't judge her on one role you've seen, where the role wasn't even that serious and she was playing the part of a clueless teenager, which she is most certainly not. Judge her after her obviously wonderful performance, not on her limited acting experience. She could surprise you indeed. She had the second biggest tour of 2011, did you know that? All those people didn't pay money to hear bad music. She has won awards because she's a bad singer or entertainer. Give her a chance :)

Honestly, Taylor Swift is a good performer, but her acting skills are horrible and her singing is mediocre at best. Her songs are catchy, but I in no way think she is capable of this role, espeically when you consider the other choices were Lea Michele, Scarlett Johansson, and Evan Rachel Wood. Major disappointment.

I, for one, am a HUGE Les Mis fan and I will not be seeing the movie just because of Swift.

I find Taylor Swift catchy, but to be honest, you can tell from all her live performances that they'll have to Autotune heavily for this movie...

I don't think it's ok to bash Taylor just because you're upset she got the part. No, she doesn't have a Broadway-caliber voice BUT she doesn't suck either. I would have liked to see one of the other, more experienced, women in the role but now that she's been cast, we might as well give her a chance to prove herself before we completely undermine her confidence. After all, she is a popular singer for a reason.
