Ohio State has been ranked No. 10 in the nation for public research according to the National Science Foundation's latest ranking of academic research and development expenditures at universities and colleges.
According to the latest InfoBrief released by the foundation, OSU moved into 10th place among public research universities, up from 12th place from the foundation's previous 2001-2002 fiscal year ranking. Among both private and public universities, OSU moved up from 18th to 15th place - ahead of universities such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of California at Davis, according to the brief.
The report, based on total research expenditures during the 2002-2003 fiscal year, has OSU's totals at $928 million ($432 million for 2002, $496 million for 2003), including $376 million ($178 million for 2002, $198 million for 2003) in federal funding. The National Science Foundation obtained the academic research and development expenditures data from 630 universities and colleges that have research and development expenditures of at least $150,000 in science and engineering, according to the foundation's brief.
"We are in the top 10 of public universities in the nation, which is a great place to be," said Robert McGrath, senior vice president for research. "I'm just proud and thrilled our faculty have achieved this wonderful accomplishment. It resulted from the very hard work and innovative ideas of faculty from across the university."
McGrath also said that OSU has grown in research activities in various fields during the period, including agricultural sciences, agricultural environment sciences, medical school, engineering, biological sciences, social and behavioral sciences, and nursing and physical science.
"All across the board our strong research programs have became even stronger," McGrath said.
This accomplishment is one of several the university has experienced in recent years.
OSU announced it had passed the $500 million mark in money awarded for research last year, according to the news and information press release provided by the university.
