Weight limit exceeded in elevator

Authorities say more than 20 students were on elevator

There were 24 people on the elevator that crushed and killed Andrew Polakowski on Friday night, according to fire department officials.

"The elevator's weight capacity is about 2,500 pounds and was exceeded," said Battalion Chief Doug Smith.

Smith said the average weight of a college student is about 150 pounds and that with twenty-four people in an elevator, the weight capacity was exceeded by more than 800 pounds.

Polakowski, a pre-business major, was pinned and crushed between the third floor and the elevator as he was trying to climb out of the elevator when it was moving, said Kyle Fischer, Polakowski's roommate.

Franklin County Coroner Dr. Bradley Lewis said to The Associated Press that Polakowski was pronounced dead on the scene, and the cause of death was injuries to the chest caused by mechanical asphyxia.…
