Women earn degrees at higher rates than men

Not only are more women than ever on college campuses nationwide, but the number of women earning college degrees continues to surpass that of men, according to statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau.

About 33 percent of women aged 25 to 29 had at least a bachelor's degree in 2007, compared with 26 percent of men.

Triathlon club gaining popularity
Janet Daly is one of many OSU students who flock to the Recreation and Physical Activity Center each winter to run on the treadmill, swim and ride the stationary bike. But unlike most students, Daly is busy training for her second triathlon.

"It's so much better than going to the gym and just getting on the treadmill. It gives you something to workout for. You aren't just mindlessly working out. You have a race and a goal to work toward," Daly said.

Treating pain with touch

Some nurse practitioners in Columbus and at the Ohio State University Medical Center use an unconventional form of treatment to ease pain, reduce stress and accelerate emotional and physical healing processes.

"Therapeutic touch works with the more subtle energies of the body," said Marjorie Anderson, a clinical nurse specialist at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital. "It's based on principles of compassion, meditation and non-attachment to an outcome."

Standing among a bustling crowd in September, Lucas Dixon watched thousands of people filter through the 900-square-foot, solar-powered homes exhibited at the National Mall in Washington.

Dixon knew he did not want to be just an observer of this competition but rather a participant of a project that transcends the idea of winning.

This week in Ohio State history

Daniel Vallera, a teaching assistant in microbiology, was bitten by a squirrel Saturday. If the squirrel is not found within two days Vallera will have to undergo a series of 14 rabies shots.

Vallera was bitten near his home at 367 W. 16th Ave. where the squirrel often came to be fed.
