Ohio State bests Dayton 74-63

The National Invitational Tournament is supposed to be the second biggest show in college basketball.

Apparently the memo failed to reach Ohio as a raucous crowd of 19,049 filled the Schottenstein Center to watch Ohio State defeat in-state rivals Dayton 74-63 for the right to play Massachusetts Tuesday in the NIT semifinals at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The Buckeyes (22-13) used a second half charge to clip the wings of the Flyers (23-11) after a slow start.

Freshman hurler pushes Bucks past Pitt
Few freshmen get the opportunity to start on the mound in their first season with a baseball powerhouse such as Ohio State. But even fewer freshmen sport the type of resume southpaw Andrew Armstrong complied in his three seasons at Turner Ashby High School in Virginia.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound true freshman made his second start of the season in Tuesday's home opener against Pittsburgh (6-12), tossing five innings of two-hit ball in the Buckeyes' 9-1 victory. The win not only improved Armstrong's record to 2-1 this season, but - perhaps even more importantly - it proved he can do something he has never had to accomplish since his Little League days: rebound from a loss.

Brown homer helps Oakland beat Boston

TOKYO (AP) - Emil Brown found a safe way home: hit the ball over the fence.

One day after Brown made a costly baserunning mistake, his three-run homer in the third inning led Oakland over the Boston Red Sox 5-1 Wednesday night and gave the Athletics a split of their opening two-game series.
