Editorial

In today's Lantern, there is a story about the dangers of exercise bulimia, a serious eating disorder in which people exercise fanatically.

They also often jump from gym to gym so that employees will not become suspicious of the length and intensity of their workouts.

What ever happened to fiscal conservatism?

by Matt Struhar

John McCain, longtime hater of earmarks and pork-barrel spending, has prided himself on his so-called "fiscal conservatism." Indeed, he showed tremendous backbone when he voted against the poorly conceived Bush tax cuts earlier in the decade. This kind of behavior has caused conservatives to go haywire and the media to celebrate McCain as a sort of maverick hero. Clinton trades position on troubling trade deal

by Brian Murphy

Recently, Hillary Clinton's chief strategist Mark Penn met with the Colombian ambassador to discuss a trade deal that would allow free trade with Colombia. Penn stated he made a mistake by taking part in this meeting. Clinton has stated she opposes this particular trade deal. NAFTA and other trade deals were an issue in the Ohio primary last month, as well. On this particular trade deal, I do not see any reason to doubt Clinton when she says she opposes it. I am less sure about her stance on NAFTA, CAFTA and other job-killing trade agreements. Nevertheless, the problem with Clinton is not her stance on any particular trade agreement but her willingness to accept the support of right-wing Democrats who support these agreements.

'Real world' not so perilous for grads

by April Steinbrunner

As I enter my last quarter as an undergrad at Ohio State, many feelings are washing over me: joy, sadness ... fear. Yes, fear. Along with the some 5,000 people getting their bachelors degrees this quarter, I am taking my first steps into the "real world." And with that comes the reality that those student loans that have been piling up over the past four years are going to come back to haunt me very soon. If that wasn't scary enough, add on the fact that my parents' insurance will soon stop covering me, and here's hoping my '97 Chevy won't finally kick the bucket. It has had some close calls recently.
