Officials take on tough tuition issue

by Michelle Fehribach

The Office of Academic Affairs at Ohio State is in the process of figuring out how to make the costs of higher education more manageable.

One of the academic priorities put forward by the OAA for the 2007-2008 school year dealt with student financial aid and stated, "We have a commitment to 'access to excellence' and providing access for economically disadvantaged, yet talented students may well require greater levels of financial support."

The university is still in a planning phase and no changes will come for at least one year, said Martha Garland, vice provost and dean of undergraduate education.

Leaders meet public opposition to Columbus streetcar

by Anna Gerber

City council chambers were overflowing Monday night with Columbus residents waiting to voice their opinion about the proposed $11.4 million per year streetcar project. While the plan has received support from city and business leaders, politicians, and Ohio State, many members of the general public take issue with the amount of money the project will require.

Next week city council will vote to approve a capital improvements budget that includes $2 million to jump-start the streetcar project. The proposed streetcar would run down the middle of High Street, from Mound Street to OSU's campus -- a 2.8 mile route. The project is scheduled to be completed for the city's bicentennial celebration in 2012.
