Ohio State has created a new vice provost position for global strategy and international affairs. The vice provost will be in charge of furthering the reputation of OSU as an internationally recognized university.
"To truly be an eminent 21st century university, you need to truly be a global university," said Daniel Sedmak, executive vice dean of the College of Medicine and chair of the search committee.
The search for a new vice provost is currently underway, said Melinda Nelson, assistant provost and search coordinator.
The vice provost will be involved in decision making at OSU by providing counsel as the director of the president and provost council on strategic internationalization. The vice provost will be the head of the Office of International Affairs, which includes programs such as the study abroad program, develop relationships with foreign institutions and international student and scholar services.
Sedmak said the most important criteria for this individual are the ability to create this global strategy and implement it.
OSU has formed a five-member search committee comprised of university leaders. There are plans to add a faculty representative to the search committee in the near future. The search committee met once and is debating using a search firm to help with the process, Nelson said.
Since the announcement of this position, OSU has already received nominations of candidates from within the university as well as outside OSU. Sedmak said he is fine with the vice provost coming from inside or outside.
"Our number-one goal is to find the best person," he said.
The search committee plans to review applications in June or July and will begin a two-step interviewing process in the fall. The first interview will be an off-campus group interview. Three to five candidates will be invited back to campus for interviews with university leaders, faculty and students.
Because this search is in its infancy, the total number of applicants is unknown. The goal is to have the new vice provost on board no later than January of 2009, Sedmak said.
