Justice without punishment

We are a nation that regards justice as one of our highest values. The concept has found its way into some of our most beloved axioms and songs and is even promised "to all" in our pledge of allegiance. Yet rarely do we stop to contemplate how we actually understand "justice." In American culture, we discuss justice as righting wrongs and ensuring everyone gets what he or she deserves. Unfortunately for those that receive justice in our culture, more often than not it comes in the form of punishment for crimes committed. "No crime will go unpunished," we declare, and we decry impunity for foreign tyrants, underhanded businessmen and sometimes even our own political leaders.

Clinton, Obama offer no solutions

As the race for the Democratic nomination is winding down with every negative political campaign ad run, I find myself as a conservative struggling to decide whom to root against. I mean seriously, who wants a candidate in office like either of the two democrats? They have hundreds of problems they want to solve, but not a single answer for one of them, well not a single viable answer.

Food crisis shows need for goodwill

Every day we hear something new about the global energy crisis. A few months ago, we watched as a barrel of oil broke the $100 mark, and now we are beginning to hear that we might see it rise to $150. We continuously hear that if we don't do something in the next few years, the world will run out of fuel and we'll be in serious trouble. However, while our attention is on the energy crisis, there is a more pressing crisis that pertains to a much more fundamental issue. The real crisis we need to focus on deals with the global shortage of food.

Many moons ago, I was asked to sit in as a substitute for Professor Larry Anderson for a meeting in the design phase of RPAC. We were shown pictures of a glass building with sweeping vistas and wide-open spaces. I made three comments at the time.
