The Sandhurst team and Lt. Col. Miller and 1st Sgt Whitney show their Ohio State pride in front of West Point.
Last week, for the first time in its history, the Ohio State Army ROTC tested its skills against some of the most elite military academies in the western world. The cadets wanted to prove they could compete with the best, and they proved to themselves they can do just that.

The 11-member team finished 26th out of 42 teams in the competition held at West Point, home of the United States Military Academy. Teams from West Point and equivalent teams from Great Britain and Canada competed against OSU, as well as a team from Brigham Young University, Texas A&M University and University of North Dakota.

Lt. Col. Todd Miller, the commander of Army ROTC at OSU, said he is proud of the finish.

Although he and the cadets wanted to finish first, he said the cadets are young and hungry and the competition was a learning experience for them. After a respectable finish in which the team beat 13 West Point teams, Miller said he felt everyone involved is now more prepared and ready to come back next year for a better finish.

Miller said the competition also helped break down stereotypes the OSU cadets and West Point cadets have toward each other.

"Those West Point cadets are just like them," he said.
