Don't point the finger at Palin when it comes to Ariz. shooting

A gunman opened fire, killing six and wounding 14 outside a supermarket northwest of Tucson, Ariz., on Saturday. But rather than expressing concern and extending prayers for the victims, including the recently re-elected U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona, many have diverted their attention to a political advertisement former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin released several months ago.

The ad consists of a U.S. map with crosshairs labeling 20 Democratic representatives who voted for President Barack Obama's health care overhaul last March. Giffords was among those targeted in the ad.

Links to Palin's map and comments blaming her for the tragic attack immediately inundated my Twitter and Facebook feeds Saturday after news media reported the incident.

"Coss-hairs (sic) on a map!!! Come on!!! … how can you even sleep at night?" Ara Talaslian commented Sunday afternoon on Palin's Facebook post, in which Palin expressed condolences for the shooting victims and their families. "God be with you and your family for the burden you will now bear for a logn (sic) time."

I wonder if Talaslian — or any of the others loosely tossing around accusations against Palin — actually knows anything about the shooter or his motives, besides that he "was a deranged crazy person."

My guess is that they don't, considering the authorities investigating the attack have limited information on the suspected shooter, 22-year-old Jared Lee Loughner.

"The authorities have not asserted any specific political motivation to the shootings other than to say that Ms. Giffords was clearly the intended target," The New York Times reported Sunday.

Loughner had exhibited abnormal, disruptive behavior in recent months, prompting administrators of Pima Community College, where Loughner was enrolled, to suspend him until he received a psychological evaluation. Loughner instead withdrew in October.

While Loughner's mental state is unknown, his actions and online posts "are consistent with the delusions produced by a psychotic illness like schizophrenia," The Times reported.

I find it sickening that people have the audacity to assert a connection between Palin's map and Saturday's heartbreaking attack. I don't care if you disagree with Palin's politics; accusing her of wishing for, and in fact promoting, such an act is callous and offensive. Fabricating such an association is rash, misguided and narrow-minded.

Please, grow up and stop exploiting every situation to bash Palin. I firmly believe she only wants this to be a better world for everyone to live in — even if she expresses it in a way some might find unfavorable. I know Palin would not have wanted Giffords to be hurt, and I know the intent of her map was not to put out hits on those 20 political figures. It clearly was meant to urge Americans to vote the listed Democrats out of office, not to assassinate them.

"Let's take back the 20, together!" the ad says in red writing of the 20 districts Republicans controlled in 2008.

Palin has acted professionally and abstained from responding to the recent wave of conjecture that she was somehow connected to this young man's aggression. She displayed class, posting nothing more than her condolences and prayers for the victims.

"On behalf of Todd and my family," Palin posted on her public Facebook page, "we all pray for the victims and their families, and for peace and justice."

I urge everyone to follow suit and pray for Giffords and the other victims of this violence. What will help these people and their families are your prayers. What will not help them are half-witted attacks against Palin and the politicization of an otherwise apolitical incident.

I am a Quebecois and a Canadian; I've known Americans all my life; I've worked with them, side by side, all my life.
On this day of the 10th anniversary of 9-11, despite whatever some in the rest of the world think about America, I believe America is the shining light. Its foundation is based on the truest, most noble and courageous of all foundational principles: We hold these truths to be self evident ... that all men are created equal ... and endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights ... LIFE, LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS .
Yes, America is not perfect; it has at times done horrible things and made terrible mistakes, but in the end, it always gets grounded back to the above.
I would only wish this were true for the rest of the world.
The real Glory of the Declaration of Independence is the constant struggle to achieve its ideal. I have learned that all human endeavours, whether it be Science, Business or Social, whether it be personal or public, are only worthy in the end, if they feed somehow into the above.
My deepest sympathies to the families of those lost on 9-11.

Fun fact: There were similar maps (on DailyKos, I think), which featured bullseyes in "targeted" Republican areas. Perhaps Sarah Palin did not cause this shooting after all.

Wow, something from this so called newspaper makes sense? Good for you! Too bad this wasn't the story ran on the 1st page...... Although I would expect the truth from the Latrine.

And for all you commenting negatively, as I'd only expect, just remember: If they bring a knife to the fight, we'll bring a gun. Isn't that a sweet, non-violent thing to say??? And, you may want to check out the use of targets in the media. Palin isn't the only one using them! Daily Kos, DLC, and others. Open your eyes before your mouth for once!

Actually, no, his high school friends called him that. Go look it up. Of course you hope he isn't a liberal cause that ruins your plans of trying to blame the tea party. As Nancy Pelosi and Barrack Obama said, "We won."

The gunman had ties to white supremacists. Are they the friends that called him a liberal?

I like how people through around words like "harassing." People try to say this was because of the Tea Party's rhetoric. Last I checked, the gunman was described as a liberal by his friends...and he liked to read the Communist Manifesto. That doesn't sound like a Tea Partier to me. AS WELL, The DAILY KOS ran an article about GIFFORDS being "DEAD TO THEM" for voting against Pelosi. Are they just as responsible as Palin?

So you want us to grow up but not Sarah??? You're kidding right. All the stuff this woman has spouted for media attention against the Obamas and we should grow up??? Lets see I put crosshairs on a map harrassing a Congresswoman. The Congresswoman gets on cable (which is being shown over and over again) and says "These kinds of things have repercussions" then she ends up with a bullet in her head and Sarah is the victim??? I'm glad Sarah is finally catching heat because she has attacked others and race baited now it's all coming back to haunt her. She can forget the WH now and concentrate on being more HOLLYWOOD!!!!

See Sarah the Congresswoman's own words of warning is the nail in your coffin!!!!!!!

Blaming Palin, or anyone other than the deranged shooter in this horrible event is like blaming the spoon for Rosie O'Donnell being fat. One lunatic with documented mental health issues is responsible for these murders and woundings.

I remember the Daily Kos ran an article about Giffords being "dead to them" since she voted against Pelosi as minority leader. Are they responsible as well?

Basically what you want us to believe is that despite 20 people being shot and 6 dying, Sarah Palin is the real victim?

It's actually come out that the guy was associated with right wing militias. Further, she had a tweet, which was deleted quickly after the tragedy, which said, "Dont RetreatRELOAD!" So, while Sarah Palin certainly did not CAUSE Loughner to do what he did, she did help create the violent political climate in which the act took place. If she is not ashamed of what she did, then she lacks any moral credibility. Surely you must acknowledge that there is an association between what she said/did and what has just occurred. They are not plausibly independent. It would be different had she simply said "Let's take back the 20, together!", but she did not.

The TV liberals are out in full force this morning on to lay blame on Palin and the conservatives. This is more proof that you liberals rely strictly on talking points as your brain trust; you like to divide and do as they are told by the media. Pray for the brave people involved and the nation of fools who follow like lemmings over the cliff.

Either you're unwilling to admit Sarah Palin's very, very frequent use of gun imagery in her campaigns against Giffords and others, or you're just ignorant of it. Which is it?
