Eid el-Adha is an officially observed religious holiday that precedes the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage of Muslims to Islam's holiest sites.

This year, the Muslim holiday of Eid El-Adha fell on the same weekend as Black Friday, the famous shopping spree tradition. Best Buy, one of the retailers participating in the event, posted a season’s greeting on one of their flyers: a little circle with “Happy Eid El-Adha” above the giant “Thanksgiving” greeting.

It was a gentle nod toward a minority group whose holiday happened to fall on the same day. It was a great gesture toward inclusiveness. No one could possibly spin glad tidings and season greetings into a negative thing, right?

Think again.

The noble gesture has caused quite an inappropriate uproar. Conservative groups like the American Family Association quickly proclaimed that this is nothing less than a war on Christmas, attacking Best Buy directly on their use of “Happy Eid” when they so adamantly refuse to even mention “Merry Christmas” on their official flyers. Never mind that that’s actually not even true, as Best Buy does use the words “Merry Christmas” on their flyers during the holiday season.

This is the same group that is calling for a boycott of The Gap because the store had “Happy Hanukkah” and “Happy Kwanza” in addition to “Merry Christmas” in their recent ads.

I can’t even begin to mention all the wrong things with that conclusion. But, it saddens me how many people are actually going along with that ignorant stance.

This is not a so-called “attack on Christmas,” or anything close to it. If anything, this is really just an “attack on anything that’s not Christmas.” The fact of the matter is that this holiday happened to lie on the same exact day as Black Friday. Christmas happens to be a month away. How this greeting could possibly be insulting to Christmas is a charge that utterly bamboozles me.

It takes a narrow-minded fundamentalist to turn glad tidings into an insult.

The crazy reaction to this gesture of respect and inclusiveness has been nothing but disgusting, not to mention downright embarrassing. We’re supposed to live in a society that respects others, regardless of their race, creed or religion. Being inclusive isn’t merely a stance that’s suggested — on the contrary, it’s a strong requirement built on our strongest core values and beliefs.

What’s even more preposterous is that in addition to being downright offensive, people are also suggesting that we should be boycotting these fine retailers for being inclusive, rather than praise them for the fine gesture.

To those advocating mass boycotts, I urge you to think through this mindless banality. No one’s attempting to attack or cater to a specific creed — retailers are only growing more accepting, as they should be. This is literally the first time this holiday, which is celebrated by millions of Americans, has been acknowledged by the retail giant. Can’t we just let the Thanksgiving-Eid week pass? I assure you we will be seeing snow angels and “Merry Christmas” greetings soon enough.

The bottom line is that being against the greeting “Happy Eid” is racist and being against “Happy Hanukkah” is anti-Semitic. These are simple facts.

Still, if you insist on continued intolerance, go ahead and leave. After all, it’s your right as an American to believe and do what you want. It’s a privilege we are blessed with, coming from that same constitution that urges us to accept others.

Just don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

Does no one else see the hypocrisy of Islam? Wherever there is Islam, there is astronomical violence. Not just America and Israel and the Middle East. Yugoslavia, India, the Phillipines, Russia. Now they are invading Australia and all over Europe committing crimes left and right. But hey, they have a different culture. We just don't understand! We should be tolerance of Islamic violence!

Christians, please shut up about the "War on Christmas." Please. Christians very, very comfortably sit in the majority in this country. People are not trying to take Christmas away from you--nor could they, even if they tried. If someone chooses to be inclusive and says "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas"--I hate to say it because it sounds harsh, but you're going to have to learn to deal with it. Especially if it's a business who is choosing to say "Happy Holidays" rather than "Merry Christmas." Businesses WANT to be inclusive; that's business 101--get more customers, turn more profit. The only people who consider this to be a political move are the people who are crying that it is a political move; it's not even a legal issue, since people can use whatever the hell holiday greetings that they want. If it really pisses you off that much that, even though Christianity is by far the largest religion in America and is by no means a minority that is in any danger of disappearing, people are choosing to say "Happy Holidays" to include those who are not a member of your specific religion, perhaps you should seek counseling.

Some of you people are the most sad people I've ever read on the internet.

Islam isn't a race but rejecting its holidays out of hand is an act of racism. How? Because so many Americans associate Islam with a specific race, and because the nationalities associated with that race are often seen as our "enemy". Islam is a very diverse religion but when one seeks to attack a privately owned business for saying to them, that they are welcome, that is just pathetic.

If you are boycotting Best Buy or the Gap, I pity you and I hope that your god pities you too.

too bad neither a white person nor a black person can tell the difference between a Muslim and Buddhist/Hindu/Skih (mispelled, my bad). Ya'll should get together and turn this country into a 3rd world since we're half way there.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

...Part Duex

2009

EVERY WHO DOWN IN WHOVILLE LIKED CHRISTMAS A LOT,

BUT THE GRINCH, WHO LIVED JUST NORTH OF WHOVILLE, DID NOT.

THE GRINCH HATED CHRISTMAS THE WHOLE CHRISTMAS SEASON

NO ONE KNOWS WHY, NO ONE KNOWS QUITE THE REASON.

IT COULD HAVE BEEN THAT THE GRINCH WAS JEW,

BUT HE WASN’T THE GRINCH SIMPLY HATED EACH WHO.

HE HATED THEM ALL SINCE THEY ALL SEEMED SO HAPPY

AND THE GRINCH’S POOR LIFE WAS COMPARATIVELY CRAPPY.

THE GRINCH WAS AN ATHIEST, GAY, AND A COMMIE

(SOMETHING HE’D LEARNED FROM HIS DAD AND HIS MOMMIE).

HE DIDN’T MIND WINTER SOLSTICE OR KWANZAA

BUT THE “CHRIST” NAME IN CHRISTMAS DROVE THAT GRUMPY GRINCH GONZA.

BECAUSE JESUS TAUGHT LOVE, GOODNESS, MORALS, AND SUCH

THINGS THAT THE GRINCH DIDN’T PRACTICE THAT MUCH.

BUT YOU KNOW THAT OLD GRINCH WAS SO SMOOTH AND SO SLICK

THAT HE THOUGHT UP A PLAN AND HE THOUGHT IT UP QUICK.

THIS YEAR NO SANTA SUIT, NO TASTY ROAST BEAST

NO TRUSTY DOG MAX OR CRASHING THE FEAST

NO MORE BROODING IN SILENCE, NO CINDY LOU WHO

NO…. THIS YEAR THE GRINCH WOULD CALL the ACLU .

SO THE GRINCH GRABBED HIS CELL PHONE, HE GOT ON THE HORN

AND CALLED ON THE MOST VILE LAWYERS E’ER BORN.

ATTORNEYS AMORAL, AGGRESSIVE AND MEAN

WHO WORK IN THE WHOLE “HATE AMERICA” SCENE.

AND YES ALL THESE LAWYERS WERE ALL CLOSET COMMIES

(SOMETHING THEY’D LEARNED FROM THEIR DADDIES AND MOMMIES).

AND THOUGH THEY WERE BAD FROM SHOELACES TO FACES

THEY’D ALL BECOME RICH ON A CONTINGENCY BASIS.

THEN HE CALLED MICHAEL NEWDOW, WHO REALLY HATES GOD

AND SOME MUSLIM LAWYER NAMED TAWFIQ HADAD.

WITH HIS DEVILS IN PLACE AND READY TO SUE

THE GRINCH NOW WAS READY TO SCREW EVERY WHO

ALL THE WINDOWS WERE DARK, QUIET SNOW FILLED THE AIR

ALL THE WHOS WERE ALL DREAMING SWEET DREAMS WITHOUT CARE.

WHEN HE CAME TO THE BRIGHT LIGHTS RIGHT THERE ON THE SQUARE.

THE GRINCH SAID, “THIS BANNER SIMPLY MUST GO

IT SAYS ‘MERRY CHRISTMAS’ IT CLEARLY SAYS SO.

I DON’T BELIEVE IN THIS JESUS CHRIST FELLOW.”

THEN THE ACLU GUYS ALL STARTED TO BELLOW,

“THIS BANNER’S ILLEGAL, INTOLERANT, INTRUSIVE.

THE WHOS MUST REPLACE IT WITH SOMETHING INCLUSIVE.”

SO THE BANNER CAME DOWN AND THE WHOS HAD SOME MEETINGS

AND PUT UP A NEW ONE THAT SAID “SEASONS GREETINGS.”

WITH THE BANNER NOW HISTORY, THE GRINCH STARTED ON

THE SWEET MANGER SCENE ON THE CITY HALL LAWN.

THE ACLU GUYS SAID, “THIS TOO MUST GO.

PUT A KWANZAA DISPLAY UP RIGHT THERE IN THE SNOW!”

MIKE NEWDOW THEN SAID,"WE'VE GOT THESE WHOS OVER BARRELS,

SO IN ALL THE WHOS SCHOOLS WE'LL ELIMINATE CAROLS!

AND WHILE ALL THIS WAS HAPPENING WHAT DID THE WHOS DO?

WHY THEY DID NOTHING BUT CRY BOO-HOO-HOO

WE DON’T HAVE THE MONEY. WE DON’T HAVE THE TIME.

THE COURTS ARE AGAINST US. IT’S SUCH A TOUGH CLIMB.

I GUESS WE’LL JUST LUMP IT. THIS MUST BE OUR FATE.

AND THEY CRIED AND THEY WHINED UNTIL ALL WAS TOO LATE.

THEN THE GRINCH AND THE LAWYERS RAN RAMPANT THROUGH TOWN.

TEARING EVERY REFERENCE TO JESUS CHRIST DOWN.

NOW ITS MANY YEARS LATER AND CHRIST IS ALL GONE

AND THE WHOS ARE ALL WONDERING WHERE DID WE GO WRONG.

OH, SURE, SANTA'S STILL THERE WITH HIS REINDEER AND ELVES

BUT AS THE WHOS SNOOZED THEY LOST PART OF THEMSELVES.

WITH CHRIST GONE FROM CHRISTMAS THE SPIRIT LEFT, TOO

AND LEFT A BIG, GAPING HOLE IN EACH SOUL IN EACH WHO.

AND WHAT OF THE GRINCH, NO, HE, STILL IS UNHAPPY

BUT IT MAKES HIM FEEL BETTER NOW THAT EVERYONE’S CRAPPY.

SO, NOW CHRISTMAS TIME’S JUST A MEM’RY FOR WHOS

WHO LET IT ALL GO TO THE ACLU’S.

When Muslims learn to practice toleration of other beliefs in their own countries, then complain about "racism" in America. The rank hypocrisy of these religious fanatics and their use of double standards is just appalling! This country and its holidays embrace values of Christianity and Judaism as integral parts of western civilization, the foundation of this nation. Others may practice or believe (or not)as they wish, but don;t inflict their anti-western, and ,yes, their intolerant religious views and demands upon the vast majority of Americans!

I will only say MERRY CHRISTMAS, or HAPPY HANUKKAH ... it's insulting that a race of people who pray every day and pray for tolerance, are so bloody intolerant of other people! How dare they! Now they want a GAP boycot. Honestly, is that all they're worried about! Pisses me off ... and you're correct, Thanksgiving has nothing to do with religion & isn't observed in every country in the world, so what are they bloody talking about.... MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY HANUKKAH TO EVERYBODY!

"Your name" : you're an idiot. Thanksgiving has nothing to do with religion. Just like there are Jewish Americans, or Christian Americans, there are also Muslim Americans who celebrate Thanksgiving just like the rest of us. It's ignorant hicks like you who give us a bad name.

Kristie: Since Thanksgiving is an American -- and, hence, "infidel" celebration -- it and Eid are mutually exclusive. Unless the truly faithfully want to risk sending their souls to the eternal hellfires of damnation! Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah and... that's all!

I am willing to overlook his English mistakes. I am just glad he did not blow up Best Buy or behead the employees.

Hany Rashwan--

When writing about a single entity such as Best Buy, wirters need to use singular pronouns.

Thus, it's wrong to write "on one of 'their' flyers."

Try instead "on one of 'its' flyers."

That's pretty basic stuff.

I think it is ironic how Muslims demand tolerance from others, but do not return the favor. Hypocrites, all of them.

So, according to liberal logic, saying Merry Christmas can be divisive or intolerant of others. Christians and retailers should instead say "Happy Holidays."

But it's perfectly okay for Muslims and retailers to say "Happy Eid" to others, because God forbid we offend our precious religious minority.

In effect, you're saying 'screw the Christian holiday greetings, we need to coddle the Muslim's holiday.'

Brilliant marketing Best Buy. Holiday greetings should be extended to everyone!

On a note: Thanksgiving and Eid are NOT mutually exclusive.

Thank you so much for the insight. It's up to our generation to support diversity and inclusiveness, the very foundations this country was built upon! Cheers to ethical corporations and their marketing strategies, Best Buy successfully reached over 1.6 potential consumers.
