Experts say global warming from the burning of fossil fuels for energy raises many questions about the future of the Arctic that span diplomacy, environment and the global economy.

Arguably the most divisive issue in American society over the past two decades has been global warming. American politicians stand on one of two sides when it comes to the issue: belief or neglect.

Long before the 2006 release of former Vice President Al Gore’s documentary “An Inconvenient Truth,” skeptical politicians labeled the idea of “man-made global warming” as ridiculous and unfounded, despite overwhelming evidence against their claims.

In 2003, Sen. James M. Inhofe, R-Okla., spoke to the Senate about the legitimacy of global warming, saying, “With all of the hysteria, all of the fear, all of the phony science, could it be that man-made global warming is the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people? It sure sounds like it.”

Despite years of mounting scientific evidence proving mankind’s effect on Earth’s warming climate, some prominent politicians still remain skeptical on the existence of climate change. In a campaign speech back in August 2011, former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said, “Do I think the world’s getting hotter? Yeah. I don’t know that, but I think that it is. I don’t know if it’s mostly caused by humans.”

While the number of global warming skeptics is dwindling, I still find myself in disbelief that a citizen holding political office in this country can make a logical argument claiming Earth’s warming climate is not man-made. The scientific data speak for themselves. Earth’s atmosphere is made up of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide that trap sunlight to keep the planet temperate. Prior to industrial advancement, Earth regulated its carbon dioxide levels naturally, but human development beginning in the 1760s has since disturbed this cycle, resulting in massive amounts of carbon dioxide being pumped into Earth’s atmosphere, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Since 1959, the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii has collected data on the measurements of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The first measurement at Mauna Loa from more than 50 years ago showed the Earth’s atmosphere held 315 ppm (parts per million) of carbon dioxide, but measurements as recent as January show a concentration of 395.55 ppm, according to the Earth System Research Library. Data derived from ice cores drilled from Earth’s poles show that in the last 400,000 years, Earth’s carbon dioxide levels never exceeded 300 ppm.

So where has the extra carbon dioxide come from then? The EPA says fossil fuel emissions are the No. 1 culprit, from coal-powered industrial plants to gas-powered automobiles. Many environmental scientists contend that the extra carbon dioxide has thickened Earth’s atmosphere, increasing average global temperatures, melting ice sheets and increasing sea levels.

Earth’s two main ice sheets reside at the planet’s poles, but the Greenland ice sheet in particular is losing mass at a far quicker rate than the sheet in the Antarctic, according to data from NASA. Data from scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory show that the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets were losing more than three times as much ice in 2012 as they were in the 1990s.

As sea levels rise, the EPA warns that coastal regions such as Florida, New Orleans and Northern Europe will fall underwater, displacing millions. .

Political neglect within Congress on the reality of global warming will lead to dangerous, irreversible consequences for American and world populations if the leaders in Washington do not start reversing course soon. During his second inaugural speech, President Barack Obama re-established global warming as a serious issue on his political agenda, saying, “We will respond to the threat of climate change, knowing that the failure to do so would betray our children and future generations.”

The president further addressed climate change and America’s need to start passing legislation now to save future citizens.

“I urge this Congress to pursue a bipartisan, market-based solution to climate change … But if Congress won’t act soon to protect future generations, I will,” Obama said in his inauguration speech.

The only way to reverse direction in America and start combatting global warming begins with the American people. Naivety, neglect, ignorance and incompetence can no longer be accepted as leadership qualifications for political candidates. In the global race for energy independence, America cannot afford to elect officials with such a strong disregard for overwhelmingly accurate scientific data. Each United States citizen needs to stand up for one another and elect politicians who will not look the other way while climate change remains a serious threat. As a whole, the American population must step forward and set an example for the rest of the world to follow, leading with a green fist to preserve the well-being of all humans, in the present and the future.

Whether you believe this article or not, it is well written. The thing I like the most is that this article has fostered conversation. What would be nice is if both sides could sit down and look at things together. From an old persons perspective, that is what is wrong with America. Too much anger and hate for others opinions. Im not sure if there is such thing as global warming but there is no doubt we are a wasteful society and we can live cleaner and better. Whether or not I agree with some parts, great article Mr. Roda. Way to keep people thinking and talking. I can't wait to see your next article

None of these global warming brainwashed lemmings is ever willing to address the hard evidence that many of the so-called "experts" actually colluded to falsify documents so that their "research" produced results that supported their hoax. Does East Anglia ring a bell? Not to mention the fact that their idols Barack Obama and Al Gore pollute the earth with one frivolous flight than the average person would in several lifetimes. But facts are stubborn things when it comes to changing the mind of delusional products of our union-dominated "education" system that is nothing more than a branch of the Democratic Party. They have produced a scary generation of useful idiots that aren't capable of thinking for themselves. To think that there are people that actually believe that mankind has a hand in causing a massive hurricane, etc. just shows what mental destruction liberals have caused.

Within a few more years, the argument will be over.

Paleo-Climatology shows that the Earth has gone through many warming/cooling cycles, with almost all of them happening before the human race existed. Obviously, a larger factor in all the climate change controversy which is is ignored is our own Sun. The cycles of the Sun are a far more major cause of these cycles than anything else. The so-called "greenhouse gasses" are actually an effect of this cycle, not a cause. Why else would there be climate cycles on Mars, as have been found? As recently as about 1980, the fear was that we were on the verge of a new ice age. Temperature levels now have been level for fifteen years; a blink of an eye in climatological time, but no less significant than any argument the global-warming crowd can come up with. Even Al Gore, who has made millions spreading his "gospel" while throwing his huge carbon footprint all over the world, now calls it "climate change" rather than "global warming". After all, he has to hedge his bets so he can continue to suck dollars from the gullible.

Global Warming is a farce made up by Al Gore to profit off people who don't know any better.

This is so interesting! Reading this reminds me of a documentary I saw recently about climate change, Chasing Ice. It's fantastic and you should check it out at chasingice.com.

Never mind that every environmental scientist on the entire planet believes that man-made global warming is happening. No: it is an international, cross-disciplinary conspiracy held together by a professor-cabal (... professors! ...) and US regulatory agencies. Yes. Yes, that's it. YES. OH AND GUESS WHAT: SOME REPUBLICANS AND ONE 87 YEAR OLD PHYSICS PROFESSOR HAS MY BACK ON THIS. IN YOUR FACE ENTIRE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY! IN . YO. FACE. HAHAAHHAAHAAA!

Wow, what a whacko article. This same author most likely pronounced the same epitath for the spotted owl issue where decades later they were proven....oops....wrong but during the time the same articles such as this were printed that something has to be done now or the sky will fall. Name one environmental issue that has ever been correct...go ahead and try. DDT? No

I would like to say something about Climate Deniers (a couple have already posted here). I have been angry at these people for years, as their stupidity in the face of overwhelming scientific data, I thought, was delaying action on Climate change. I have come to realize, however, that they are of little consequence. The problem lies with us, the people. We do not want to accept the massive changes that are required in our societies to prevent the catastrophe that is imminent. We are addicted to fossil fuels and the lifestyles they have given us, to virtually eliminate them from our societies is unthinkable for 99 percent of us. I am no longer angry at the denier trolls that always appear on these articles, they have no potency. We have to look at ourselves and see what we can do as individuals.

I think you would benefit from an education focusing on physics, geophysics, chemistry, and knitting. The EPA - much like the CDC and the FDA publish studies without reference to who conducted it, how long, what factors involved, nor if the conclusions have been verified. Overviews of scientific papers published within the last ten years cannot claim a high level of accuracy; Overviews of current research publications discovered that most studies bear false conclusions - for a number of reasons. The sea levels are not rising, weather patterns are normal, and the Earth does have cycles of weather. A recent study counters the EPA findings "Environmental Effects of Increased Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide" - Harold Lewis is Emeritus Professor of Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. If you cannot bother to read it, then you know why "you are in disbelief" that someone can have sensible reasons to conclude climate changes are not caused by man.
Wish you well.

The science is clear: human activity is impacting climate change. Arguing that policy should or should not be enacted based on science is when it changes to a political issue.

There is significantly more doubt - and rightfully so - over the "man made" label than on global warming itself. I suspect we are in a warming trend. I have serious doubts, based on the bad science, that the finger should be pointed to man. This is where it becomes political and the proposed solutions like carbon taxes are perceived as liberals pressing an agenda to increase their unsatisfiable need to TAKE more from the worlds producers.

The extra carbon dioxide comes from thousands of jet planes in the sky every day.
