A statue of Benjamin Franklin sits amid the Founding Fathers in the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia.

In the words of U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler, two-time recipient of the Medal of Honor, in his speech to a Boston Veterans of Foreign Wars Convention in August 1939, “There are only two things for which Americans should be permitted to fight, defense of home and the Bill of Rights.”

The Bill of Rights, the first 10 amendments to the Constitution, is a document cited as often as forgotten. I have attempted to use the Founding Father’s words to address the First, Second and Fourth amendments in terms of their current controversy.

Former President George Washington, said in a 1783 meeting of officers in Newburgh, N.Y., that the First Amendment, our right to free speech and a religion of our choosing, is imperative because, “If the freedom of speech is taken away, then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter.”

The distinction of church and state originates from the letters of former President Thomas Jefferson. But Washington also addressed it in his “Farewell Address.”

“Let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle,” Washington said.

The Second Amendment, our right to bear arms, as described by former President Thomas Jefferson in an 1824 letter to English naval Maj. John Cartwright, as “(Americans’) right and duty to be at all times armed.”

Washington also addressed gun manufacturing.

“(Americans’) safety and interest require that they should promote such manufactories as tend to render them independent,” Washington said in his 1790 “First Annual Message to Congress.”

Madison explained in “The Federalist Papers No. 46” that the right to be armed is an advantage Americans have over almost every other nation where the “governments are afraid to trust the people with arms.”

The Fourth Amendment is the right against unreasonable searches and seizures. Former President John Adams said citizens are obliged to this right while addressing taxation in his 1779 draft of the Massachusetts Constitution,
“(The citizen), is obliged, consequently, to contribute his share to the expense of this protection … But no part of the property of an individual can with justice, be taken from him, or applied to public uses, without his own consent,” Adams said.

We keep the words of our forefathers because they guide us through times we could not have foreseen and remind us of who we are and why we do the things we do. These were their words, and as you listen to the final weeks of the campaign, keep the words of the men who gave us this nation with you.

Remember foremost Madison’s remark within an 1822 letter to W. T. Barry, “A people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives.”

This article doesn't have any point! What the HELL does the Fourth Amendment have to do with anything in this election? PATRIOT Act? I don't know because you never say!!! Seriously. What is the point you are trying to make? I bet there is one in there but you muddle it with too many copied and pasted quotes.

I also want to add some comments regarding Benghazi, Libya and the conduct of the White House. We are still waiting for straight answers. This unfortunately has become a dangerous pattern in the Obama White House, of indecision and lowering the esteem, worth, and influence of this great country in the world while putting at risk Americans at home and abroad. Obama has proven indecisive and at times embarrassing when dealing with the enemies of the US and of the free world. His "off mike" comments have been embarrassing. My experience tells me let's change. Let's win back America and American pride. I have to urge your support for Josh Mandel and Mitt Romney.

Ohio State students could change the course of history. Six weeks have passed and still no answers. We have the right to know how our Commander in Chief is protecting Americans before the election. Research what happened in Benghazi then take appropriate action to do what is right.

Why is Benghazi being ignored by the media? I just googled Charles Woods radio interview. His son was a Navy Seal murdered in Benghazi. These Americans begged for help before and during the attack on the American Embassy in Libya and were ignored and left to die. If the President's daughter were in that embassy would help have been sent? An inapproriate question maybe, but a viable question perhaps in the minds of the parents of those who died. Who can defend this?

To graduate from OSU means to go forward to own property and pay taxes. A person who is a property owner or a taxpayer or both is not a Democrat. That person is a tax target. Get out in vote. Ohio might be it.

"Religious bondage shackles and debilitates the mind and unfits it for every noble enterprise."- James Madison, letter to William Bradford, 1771

"Former President George Washington, said in a 1783 meeting of officers in Newburgh, N.Y., that the First Amendment, our right to free speech and a religion of our choosing, is imperative..."

1783??? Weren't we under the Articles of Confederation then? And there were no amendments to it... The amendments to the Articles ultimately became our current Constitution (1789) & the first ten amendments were ratified in 1791??

The President must protect Americans advocating for democracy overseas.Four lives lost no explanation, no recognition of the threats they feared. What happened in Benghazi Libya? Why were pleas of help unheard. Why does President Obama often neglect meetings with advisors for security briefs and reads them on his Ipad without conversation and collaboration? I am so disappointed. This is not the ideal for the American President I hoped for in 2008. Our country is declining everyday. So depressing, do we really want more of this?

"With great power becomes great responsibility" Let us take back responsibility for our nation and regain power as citizens of this country. As implied in this article, our 1st, 2nd, and 4th amendments are slowly being eroded in the name of safety, and decency. We as a nation and a people forget the cost of freedom which was necessary to found our nation.
