There are better ways to spend a Saturday than watching football

Buckeye Nation, I’m going to let you in on a secret. I don’t like football, and I’m done pretending that I care.

I’m tired of the hordes of people that swarm campus decked out in their scarlet and gray every game day. I’m annoyed that my cell phone stops working as a result of this. I hate that every Saturday in the fall I begrudgingly must wake up and dawn something red or gray to avoid being heckled as I walk down the street. And if I need to drive anywhere on game day, forget getting there on time; I’m sick of sitting in extra traffic.

I’ve tried to fight these feelings of resentment.

Three years ago, starry-eyed and in awe of the ‘Shoe, my naive freshman self bought football tickets. I grouped with some friends and on the day of the first game proudly waded through the thousands of people to my designated spot in the north stands.

I quickly realized I know nothing about football, but it was pretty easy to follow along with everyone else. Cheer when everyone else did, boo at appropriate intervals, high five that guy behind me and no one was any wiser. I’ll admit I had some fun, it was easy to buy into the excitement of the crowd.

Then came the noon games when it was a chore to pull myself out of bed on a Saturday morning and drag myself down to the stadium. I started leaving the games earlier and earlier.

And now, as a disenfranchised third-year, I am not so proud to admit that I do not like football. So call me out on Twitter and jeer at me on the street. I’ll still say it’s only a game and a boring one at that.

I’d much rather spend my Saturday afternoon watching soccer, golf, tennis, or any number of other far more entertaining sports.

Try as I might, I just don’t understand the hype, or how many individuals’ jobs, careers, lives center around this sport. Not to mention the millions of dollars spent annually by the Ohio State athletic department. It all seems so excessive.

My confused frustration climaxes on Beat Michigan Week. For seven whole days, football and all of its hype and jargon are unavoidable. It’s like everyone is part of some club that denied my membership, made apparent in every crossed out “M” on campus.

Everyone’s profile picture changes to a photo of them and their friends displaying their best O-H-I-O. Every other tweet gets a #BeatMichiganWeek. The Ohio Union even has a beat Michigan craft night.

Don’t get me wrong, I am proud to be a Buckeye and most days I like OSU. I just can’t buy into devoting so much time and energy into watching 22 guys romp around a field running into each other.

And I do actually give a damn for the whole state of Michigan.

Good piece, Ms. Byler! While football used to be my favorite sport when I was little, the "game" nowadays bears no resemblance to what I played when I was young. Most of it is corrupted by money and egos in much the same way OSU is corrupted by...money and egos!

Whereas my grade school friends and I learned teamwork, following the rules, respect for opponents and other life lessons, during the Mirror Lake jump on campus all I seemed to hear was "*** MIchigan" and other obscenities and stupidity.

I have nothing against Michigan. Why would I? Why would any well adjusted person hate another state of the union? Makes no sense.

Hey Anonymous "
Pretty hard-headed to compare not liking coffee to not caring about arguably the biggest deal there is in a community, which football is to OSU."
I was making a COMPARISON. Whining about football at Ohio State is like whining about coffee - it's everywhere, lots of other people like it, no one says you have to, so suck it up and GET OVER IT!!!!
Just sayin'!

You wouldn't go anywhere near a concert arena when this month's biggest star/starlet was performing if you didn't like that particular person, why go near the 'Shoe when you don't like football?

So you wasted your time writing this just so you can get attention? That is pretty sad

There is a bustling underground here in Columbus. James Thurber OG member. You're not supposed to write an article about it and sign your name, but hey, it's the 90s now.

Wah.
And I don't like coffee. It makes me sick that all these other people DO like coffee, though and try to shove it on me! Coffee this and coffee that! They even have it for free at my workplace! But I don't LIKE it!!!! Wah

I used to feel the same way when I was a student here, but I also used to hate sports in general. Over the years I have gained a growing appreciation for football and now really enjoy it. However, I don't begrudge others who are not into it. You tried and it wasn't something you were into. It is brave to write an article in the Lantern that states how you feel. I'm some sure some @ssholes will give you sh!t for it, but they are just showing their ignorant intolerant attitude and who really cares what those type of people "think".

I grew up in Columbus, I attended OSU for 4 years, and I came back and have worked at the University for as long. I have pride in the institution, but I don't give a flying F&^% about footballl. You are not alone. And the hype concerning the program is so great that I'm sad to say you will get ripped a new one by many loyal fans. But they're okay and you're okay. I never bought football tickets because I don't care, and I never lived on campus because I don't want to be inconvenienced on game day. Waking up early on a Saturday has never been a problem for me on a noon game day because I don't concern myself with it. Just be grateful that so many people are glued to the TV and take advantage of it: go shopping without lines! Travel without traffic (as long as you don't go near campus, that is.) Don't get me wrong - I am glad when we win, because it will make many people I know and love happy, but I'm not excited for them to win. If someone asks you to tailgate, go to spend time with your friends and eat food and then get out of the football fans' way!

"Also, if you struggle to get up for a 12:00 game, you probably will not like working."

That doesn't make a lot of sense. Maybe those people who struggle to get ready for a game at noon work and/or are students during the week and would like to sleep in/relax on the weekends instead of getting up "early" to go yell at 20-year-olds kids running around with footballs.

You are entitled to your opinion, but there is no reason to be disrespectful to the rest of the students who appreciate football. Honestly, they would rather you not be at the stadium acting clueless. There is no law that you have to like sports, and there is no reason for you to go on a rant about it. Also, if you struggle to get up for a 12:00 game, you probably will not like working. You really come off as a spoiled brat though who was upset they bought tickets to try to be popular.

Wow, it must be absolutely terrible to be inconvenienced for 8 days out of the year!! If only OSU wouldn't have done the old bait n switch when you decided to come here and actually let you know that the University basically shuts down for football games....

Agree, too bad the comments on this article will probably mostly be from our embarrassing classmates (who can't comprehend that not everybody loves football) saying "go live in Michigan" and "the Lantern hates OSU" etc
