OSU students cheer during a men’s basketball game against Michigan on Jan. 13 at the Schottenstein Center. OSU won, 56-53.

The Ohio State men’s basketball team is coming off arguably its biggest win of the season, taking down archrival Michigan, 56-53, but I still don’t care.

OK, it’s not that I don’t care, but I just am not nearly as interested as I have been in previous years.

Teams led by Jared Sullinger, Evan Turner and Greg Oden were the things my life revolved around. School, work, even relationships took a back seat to watching these teams play. Whatever the record, although they were typically fantastic, I would find the Buckeyes on television and shut out all else. But this season I have found it harder and harder to get really into OSU basketball games.

Although the turnout at Woody’s for those students who couldn’t attend the Michigan game might tell you otherwise, there are many students who are dealing with the same indifference.

The passion and pure unadulterated joy that came to campus last year after home victories against Duke and Indiana just has not been matched this season.

But what is it that is keeping this talented team from garnering the following that previous Thad Matta-led squads have had? It is hard to pinpoint an exact reason as to what has changed from such a short time ago since there are so many factors contributing to the decline in interest.

Potentially most clear of all is the inflated expectations this team has suffered from. Ranked No. 4 overall in the preseason AP poll, OSU hasn’t quite lived up to these lofty beginnings, dropping three games to some very talented teams in Duke and Illinois and at home against Kansas.

But the drop-off from where they began to where they are now has been a rude awakening for fans who have become accustomed to a consistent top-10 team.

Add the lack of new recruits this year, a perfect football season stealing the spotlight from basketball and what I am terming as the Jared Sullinger hangover, it is no wonder fans are showing a lack of enthusiasm this year.

With the depth of the conference this year, every game is going to matter and home-court advantage will play into the Buckeyes’ chances at competing for the Big Ten Championship. The fans could by key down the stretch for OSU.

Looking ahead, the Buckeyes will travel to Michigan State for another tough test against the Spartans Saturday at 6 p.m. before returning to Columbus to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes.

I've watched every single single game since Matta became coach. What makes this year exciting, is we don't have an Oden, a Conley, a Sulllinger... and yet we are a top 10 team with talented players with much character.

I'm excited. We have a high flying dunker. We have a tenacious defender. We have a shoot the lights out scorer and a up and coming ~7' shot blocker. We have a 6'5 SG that grab rebounds, passes, scores, you name it, he does it - with energy.

I'm very excited about the team. Would like to see some big name recruits come through, but isn't it refreshing to have some kids that aren't 'one and done' kids for a change ? I think it's healthy for the program actually.

Look at Kentucky, they retool and are 10-5. I think we retool every year and end up still with good teams!

Still exciting :) And beating Michigan was freaking awesome the way we man handled them in the first half. I can't wait to demolish Illinois at home.

Michigan St this week baaaaby - can't wait!

I'm sorry for you that you can't get excited about the Buckeyes this year, and I hope that your implication that OSU fans in general share this relative apathy is incorrect. I have been an OSU fan for many years, and one of the things that has always excited me is the traditionally, OSU fans are supportive in both good and bad years. You haven't even seen any bad years, and yet you sound ready to give up on them. If you feel this way when your team is #11 in the country, I can't imagine how you would respond during one of those years when they are not even ranked. I hope you can get past this and enjoy watching your team try, even if they are not in the top 5!

While Ohioi State is a good team they are not a great team.Lacking a good center and good shooting guards they wil not make a long tournament run.Ohio state has one decent shooter and percentage wise he has not set the world on fire so yes,i can understand the fans lack of enthusiam..The best we can hope for this year is that somebody else besides Thomas can develope and we have a little longer tournament run of more then 1 or 2 games.Recruiting was a downer this year and one can only hope Matta gets his touch back for next year.

Daniel speak for your self. We are seeing some of the best basketball in America. No we are not going to win every game but they are still very good. I will take your tickets if you don't want them.

We absolutely need a better inside game and Thad knows that. Its' absense is the reason we lost to Duke, Indiana and Kansas.

Back off the ledge people. I understand that it has been rough lately but this is to be expected. I suppose if you think in terms that Matta is not as good as recruiting and coaching then I guess Coach K, Roy Williams, and Bill Self and several others are not very good either. My point is this, they all go through dry spells and for Matta to coach in the best conference in the nation and not expect to have some valley's along the way is a little crazy. We'll be fine, Go Bucks!

Maybe it's the fact that any first half lead does not seem to be safe. Maybe it's because we have the league's top scorer who can go several possessions without even touching the ball. Maybe it's because we have a point guard who has no confidence in his shot. Maybe it's because we have a high school All-American center who has no offensive skills. Maybe it's because Thad Matta isn't is good as a coach and recruiter as we think he is.
